Document I.62 · Published Genealogies and County Histories · transcription: partial
Map of Morris County New Jersey, 1853 — published wall map. Long Hill detail names TWO Cooper residences, BOTH PRIMARY-SOURCE-LOCKED via [D.233](../D-Federal-Census/D.233.yaml): W. Cooper = William Cooper b. 1813 NJ Farmer $4,500 RE dwelling 305 NORTH side of road; A. Cooper = Alexander Cooper b. 1828 NJ Farmer $12,000 RE dwelling 255 SOUTH side of road (immediate east neighbor of Joseph Blake dwelling 254 = map's J. Blake). Map's W and A Cooper labels are on OPPOSITE sides of the road despite their close visual placement. THIRD unlabeled Cooper household = Eleanor M. + Catharine M. Cooper at dwelling 287 (likely widow + daughter of John Cooper of Long Hill per G.4).

- Identification: Mid-19th-century published wall map of Morris County, NJ. Title-cartouche text (upper-left corner) partially legible at the rendered resolution: "MAP OF / MORRIS COUNTY / NEW JERSEY / From Original Surveys / By [publisher name partial]". The cartouche includes a vignette engraving of a public building (likely the Morris County courthouse at Morristown). Multiple town-view inset engravings appear at the corners, including a Dover town view (lower-left) and what appears to be a Madison or Morristown view (lower-right). Township boundaries are shown in distinct color blocks (chromolithograph style typical of 1850s Smith / Lightfoot / Robinson NJ wall maps). Common 1853 Morris Co. wall-map candidates pending higher-resolution title-block reading: Robinson; Lightfoot; Geil & Smith; R. P. Smith.
Data — Full-map level (verbatim from (image held in the family archive))
- Title cartouche text (partially legible): "MAP OF MORRIS COUNTY NEW JERSEY From Original Surveys"
- Insets visible:
- Upper-left: title cartouche + vignette engraving of a public building (likely the Morris County courthouse)
- Lower-left: "DOVER" town inset (annotated as such in the white box)
- Lower-right: town inset, label not legible at current resolution (possibly Madison or Morristown business district)
- Upper-right: legend or county-statistics block (text not legible at current resolution)
- Compass rose visible upper-left
- Township boundaries shown in distinct color washes (red, yellow, blue, etc.) consistent with 1850s chromolithograph wall-map convention
- The map covers all of Morris County NJ; major towns visible as named points; rural areas show individual residence labels (typical of 1850s NJ wall maps where each homestead is named with the head-of-household)
Data — Long Hill detail crop (verbatim from (image held in the family archive))
The pre-cropped Long Hill detail shows residence-level labels along the Long Hill ridge and the surrounding plain:
- "Long Hill" label written along the ridge (matches geographic position of B.42 Long Hill RevWar manuscript map's "Long Hill" inscription, ~75 years later)
- "Wilcox" — residence label, top-center
- "C. Allen" — residence label
- "I. McEowen" — residence label
- "R. McE" / "M. McEowen" — residence label(s) — McEowen family appears multiple times along Long Hill, consistent with I.46 Munsell 1882 noting "McEowen" as one of the 1732 Long Hill founding-families alongside Cauldwell + Carle + Boyle + Cooper
- "J.R. Nyon" [= Runyon?] — residence label
- "Dell" or "Doll" — residence/locality label
- "Aden" / "E. Aden" [= Eden?] — residence labels (multiple)
- "Edwin..." — partially legible residence label
- "[name] Cottage" — residence label
- "Scale of Feet" notation in the upper region of the inset
- A small lake/pond shown
- Roads shown as thin lines connecting residences
Tight-zoom re-examination 2026-05-09 (maintainer) — TWO Cooper residence labels confirmed (retracts prior "no Cooper labels" reading)
The maintainer supplied two zoom clips of (image held in the family archive) on 2026-05-09. The first clip prompted a misread (see "Reading history" below); the second, higher-quality clip resolves the labels along the road. Verbatim transcription of all labels legible in the higher-quality clip, in approximate left-to-right reading order:
West / left edge of the clip:
- "D. Heath" (residence label, upper-left)
- "A. Smith" (residence label, just below D. Heath)
- "…eson" (partial residence/landmark label, left edge — possibly "[surname]eson" cut off)
- "S.H." (small label, possibly "S.H." initials or a "S.H." store/landmark — adjacent label "Inns Store" or similar partial, then "Boyle" further down)
- "B.S." (small label between S.H. and J. Burton)
- "J. Burton" (or possibly "J. Bisten" / "J. Beaten" — cursive, second word ambiguous)
- "W.S." (small label preceding J. Millet)
Additional landmarks per maintainer 2026-05-09 follow-up zoom (not in the primary clip but on the wider map):
- "Jos Patton" — residence label on the same Long Hill area (exact placement not yet captured)
- "J Lounsbury" — residence label "just south of Long Hill" per maintainer = south side of the road / south slope of the ridge
These two map-neighbor labels were used 2026-05-09 to test which 1850 Morris Co. NJ township enumerated the Long Hill area: Patton search returned 3 Morris-Co. Pattons (Mary E Chatham, Michael + Bridet Hanover) — none Joseph; Lounsbury search returned Jeremiah Lounsbury enumerated in Morris Township 1850, confirming Long Hill in 1850 = Morris Township (not Chatham as the v190.5x10d sweep had assumed). See D.232 for the search trail.
Center of the clip (the road carrying the Cooper labels):
- "J. Millet" (residence label)
- "W. Cooper" (residence label) — living head of household 1853; primary-source-locked via D.233 as William Cooper b. 1813 NJ Farmer $4,500 RE dwelling 305
- "A. Cooper" (residence label, SOUTH side of road) — living head of household 1853; per D.233 PRIMARY-SOURCE-LOCKED = Alexander Cooper b. 1828 NJ Farmer $12,000 RE dwelling 255 family 279, 1850 Morris Twp, with Abagail Cooper 22 (likely wife) + Susan Cooper 62 (likely widowed mother in family 280 same dwelling). Lock established by adjacency to Joseph Blake at dwelling 254 (= map's "J. Blake" label). Map's W. Cooper and A. Cooper labels are on OPPOSITE sides of the road despite their close visual placement: W. Cooper north, A. Cooper south.
- "J.H. Wilson Est" (residence label — the "Est" = "Estate" suffix belongs to Wilson) — Wilson family member deceased by 1853, property still held in his estate. Strongest census candidate = dwelling 334 Henry R Wilson household (Henry 28 sawyer + Sarah 30 + Mary A 2): Henry R may be the son of deceased J.H. Wilson living on the inherited property; the map labels by the deceased ancestor's name, the census by the live occupant. Alternative candidate: dwelling 253 Wm A Wilson household (Mary Wilson 57 widow + Catharine 30 + Wm A 16 + Sarah Rienhart 83) — but dwelling 253 is geographically WEST of Cooper-305, contradicting the map's east-of-Cooper Wilson Est position.
South / below the road:
- "J. Blake" (residence label)
East / right edge of the clip:
- "LONG[___]" — partial label, likely "LONG HILL" (the cartographer's annotation labeling the ridge itself; matches the cartouche-style "Long Hill" inscription)
- "I.B[___]" — partial residence label (right edge cut off)
- "Gludlow" (or possibly "Cludlow" / "Gladlow" — first letter unclear in cursive; residence label)
- "Runyon" (residence label, lower right) — Runyon family-name match consistent with I.46 Munsell 1882 noting Runyon as one of the Long Hill founding families and with Daniel Sr's 1st wife Grace Runyon
Reading history (audit trail per memory feedback_history_md_workflow.md):
- v190.5x10d sweep (2026-05-08) — concluded " No Cooper labels visible on the Long Hill detail crop." Wrong; rendered crop scaled the surname labels below the legibility threshold.
- First zoom clip 2026-05-09 morning (lower quality) — read as "W. Cooper" + "J.H. Cooper Est" + adjacent J. Millet / J. Blake / partial Gla… labels. Wrong; misread "A.C. Blair / J.H. Wilson Est" as "J.H. Cooper Est" because the lower-quality clip blurred the boundary between adjacent labels.
- Higher-quality zoom clip 2026-05-09 morning — read as "W. Cooper + A. Cooper + J.H. Wilson Est" (= the "Est" suffix correctly identified as belonging to Wilson, not Cooper). Wrong on second label; "A. Cooper" was a misread of "A.C. Blair" — cursive Blair visually resembles Cooper especially with the reading-eye primed by adjacent "W. Cooper."
- Page 139 census triangulation 2026-05-09 afternoon — primary-source page 139 shows Alexander C. Blair (NOT Cooper) at dwelling 306. Cataloguer hypothesized the map's second label was "A.C. Blair" misread as "A. Cooper" → "ONE Cooper household, not two." This hypothesis was wrong; the census evidence about dwelling 306 is unrelated to the map (the map simply skips the Blair household).
- Third map zoom 2026-05-09 evening — maintainer supplied a still-higher-resolution map zoom in which the second label is unambiguously "A Cooper." Blair-misread hypothesis RETRACTED. Reading from iteration 3 restored: TWO Cooper households on Long Hill 1853.
- Page-image of dwellings [number removed]-05-09 evening (current) — maintainer pulled the page that contains Joseph Blake at dwelling 254 (37, Farmer, $12,000 RE, b. Maine) + Alexander Cooper at dwelling 255 (22, Farmer, $12,000 RE, b. NJ) + Susan Cooper 62 family 280 same dwelling. A. Cooper IDENTIFICATION LOCKED at primary-source grade = Alexander Cooper b. 1828 dwelling 255 SOUTH side of road, by adjacency to Joseph Blake (= map's J. Blake label). South-side-first census-walking theory PRIMARY-SOURCE-CONFIRMED: dwellings 254-292 on south side (Hull walks south first, encountering Blake-Alexander cluster early in the walk; then crosses to north side at dwelling 305+ where William Cooper b. 1813 lives). Map's W. Cooper and A. Cooper are visually close on the map but on OPPOSITE sides of the road in real geography. See D.233 for the page-254-255 verbatim transcription.
Geographic placement. The Cooper houses sit along an east-west road that also carries (W → E) J. Millet → W. Cooper → A. Cooper → J.H. Wilson Est, with J. Blake to the south and a "Long Hill" ridge inscription to the east; D. Heath, A. Smith, and Boyle / Inns Store cluster to the west. Runyon and Gludlow are nearer the east end of the visible road segment. The exact present-day road has not yet been matched against modern Long Hill Twp road names; that requires reading the wider Long Hill / Connected map crops (still-pending task).
Cooper-line context (NOT data from the document — interpretation)
The 1853 map post-dates Daniel Sr's death by 58 years; it documents persistence of TWO Cooper-name households on Long Hill into the 4th generation (the immediate sons Daniel Jr d. 1787 + John d. 1778 + Benjamin d. 1794 are all 60+ years dead by 1853, so W. Cooper + A. Cooper of 1853 are necessarily grandsons or great-grandsons, or in-law-line Coopers).
Identifications:
-
"W. Cooper" PRIMARY-SOURCE-LOCKED = William Cooper b. 1813 NJ Farmer $4,500 RE dwelling 305 family 332 page 139 line 1, 1850 Morris Twp Morris Co. NJ census (Sam'l P. Hull Ass't Marshal Schedule I, 5 Dec 1850). Lock established by:
- Dwelling-number adjacency: census dwelling 291 (William Boyle) + dwelling 292 (Abraham Dunn, Merchant — the map's "A Dunns Store") primary-source-attest the west-neighbor cluster shown on the 1853 map; William Cooper's dwelling 305 is 13 dwellings east, matching the map's spacing.
- Page-139 verbatim shows William Cooper (37, Farmer, $4,500 RE, NJ) at line 1 + Martha Cooper (31) + Catharine Doty (28) — exact match to the D.233 Ancestry record-detail for the William-b.1813 farmer.
William's wife Martha was b. ~1819 NJ; Catharine Doty (28, b. ~1822 NJ) is in the household — possible relation (sister-in-law? sister of William? niece?) or domestic. William's parents are not yet identified — primary-source target.
-
"A. Cooper" PRIMARY-SOURCE-LOCKED = Alexander Cooper b. 1828 NJ Farmer $12,000 RE dwelling 255 family 279 line 15, 1850 Morris Twp Sam'l P. Hull Schedule I. Lock established by:
- Adjacency to Joseph Blake at dwelling 254 (= the map's "J. Blake" label) primary-source-confirmed via maintainer page-image; map shows A. Cooper visually next to J. Blake; census shows their dwellings 254 + 255 = literal next-door neighbors.
- Substantial real-estate value ($12,000 RE) consistent with a labeled-on-map household; smaller households were skipped by the cartographer.
- Sole A___-initial Cooper male in 1850 Morris Twp (per D.233 27-result list) — Alexander b. 1828 was the only catalog candidate, and the page-image confirms him at dwelling 255.
Alexander age 22 + Abagail Cooper 22 (likely wife) + Susan Cooper 62 (likely widowed mother, family 280 sharing dwelling 255 with Alexander's family 279) + 2 Irish domestic servants (John Norton 23 + Margaret Wallace 30). Alexander's substantial wealth at age 22 likely reflects inheritance from a deceased father; this would make Susan Cooper 62 b. ~1788 his widowed mother. Susan's husband (Alexander's father) is the next research target — if a Long Hill Cooper male d. before 1850, he is a candidate for Daniel-Sr-Long-Hill-line continuation.
-
"J.H. Wilson Est" candidate = dwelling 334 Henry R Wilson household (Henry 28 sawyer + Sarah 30 + Mary A 2). Reasoning: "Est" = Estate of deceased; living census occupant is Henry R Wilson age 28 b. 1822, plausibly the son of a deceased "John Henry Wilson" who would have been b. ~1790-1800. Alternative candidate: dwelling 253 Wm A Wilson household with Mary Wilson 57 widow — but that's geographically west of Cooper, not east. Maintainer search 2026-05-09: Wilson hits in 1850 Morris Twp jump from dwelling 253 to dwelling 334 with no Wilsons in between, confirming dwelling 334 is the only east-of-Cooper Wilson candidate.
Whether William b. 1813 + Alexander b. 1828 are Daniel-Sr-Long-Hill-line male descendants requires primary-source genealogical work. Suggestive but not proven cross-link: per G.4 Cooper Family Burying Ground at Long Hill, an earlier "John Cooper of Long Hill" married to "Elinor/Eleanor" had children in the 1817-1821 window (their infant daughter Fanny d. 1821 is buried there). William b. 1813 would fit as a possible elder son of that John+Elinor union (born ~3-4 years before Fanny). Alexander b. 1828 would NOT fit John+Elinor (he is 11 years younger than Fanny, and the John+Elinor household appears to dissolve after 1821); Alexander's parentage is more likely a different Cooper line.
Both identifications require primary-source work: 1850 + 1860 Federal Census Passaic Twp Morris Co. NJ enumerator pages should resolve both heads of household by full given name + age + birthplace. Morris Co. deed grantor index 1830-1860 for Long Hill / Passaic Twp transactions would provide a second independent attestation. The two Coopers are listed adjacent on the map = they are likely close kin (brothers, father-and-son, or uncle-nephew), so resolving one likely resolves the other.
The "J.H. Wilson Est" label is an unrelated Wilson household (deceased by 1853, estate-held property) — not a Cooper. The Wilson surname has no current catalog entry as a Cooper-line in-law connection.
Cross-references
- B.42 — Long Hill Revolutionary War manuscript map (~1778 era; same "Long Hill" geographic feature labeled, ~75 years earlier)
- I.46 Munsell 1882 — Long Hill founding-families 1732 (Cauldwell + Carle + Boyle + McEowen + Cooper); the "Boyle" residence label on this 1853 map is a likely descendant of the 1732 founding-family Boyle line (and McEowen / Cooper persistence into 1853 confirmed)
- A.8 — Daniel Sr 1791 will directs estate sale; with two Cooper households still on Long Hill in 1853 the "estate sold to non-Coopers" reading is qualified — at least some Cooper-line property persisted
- G.4 — Cooper Family Burying Ground, Long Hill (Chestnut Street) — documents Daniel Jr d. 1787, John d. 1778, Anna Cross Cooper d. ~1798, Fanny Cooper d. 1821, Stephen Cooper, plus a "John + Elinor" Cooper couple of Long Hill (parents of Fanny). The 1853 map's two living Coopers are likely descended from one of these branches; primary-source resolution pending.
- D.44 — 1830 Hanover Twp Morris Co. census Cooper cluster (William / David / William Jr / Hugh / Jonas G / Ananias / Stephen); adjacent county area but not Long Hill — possible source population for a "W. Cooper" or an "A. Cooper" who relocated to Long Hill by 1853
- D.232 — 1850 federal census Chatham Twp NJ Cooper search (superseded; wrong township)
- D.233 — 1850 federal census Morris Twp Morris NJ Cooper search (correct township) — surfaces strongest map-W candidate William Cooper b. 1813 NJ Farmer $4500 RE dwelling 305 + strongest map-A candidate Alexander Cooper b. 1828 NJ (sole A___-initial Cooper male in 27-result list). Page-image adjacency check is the next test.
- B.7c — Ananias Cooper of Chester Twp Morris Co. NJ alive 1839 (Roxbury / Long-Island English-colonial Cooper line per project
pr.26 Roxbury Cooper family out-of-scope (RESOLVED).md; if "A. Cooper" of 1853 Long Hill = Ananias, this would be a cross-line geographic anomaly) - I.61 Morris County Townships in 1740 (companion-period orientation map)
- I.63 — 1868 Town of Passaic atlas plate (15 years later; same road segment shows THREE Cooper residences = W Cooper + new A Cooper west of W + A. Cooper with J Blake; the W and A. Cooper of 1853 persist; one NEW A Cooper appears 1853-1868)
- D.235 — 1860 Morris Twp Cooper enumeration (William persists at $15,000 RE without wife; Alexander 32 has 4 children incl. son William Jr 8 = first Y-line carrier candidate)
- D.236 — 1870 Passaic Twp Cooper enumeration (William 58 + Martha H 46 likely 2nd wife + Margaret 17 = Y-line dead-end; Alexander 42 + Abagail 42 + 7 children incl. William Jr 18 Clerk + Abraham 8 = TWO Y-line carriers)
- "Runyon" residence label at the east end of the Cooper-row road = same Runyon family line as Daniel Sr's first wife Grace Runyon (Munsell I.46 1732 founding family); reinforces the Long-Hill Runyon-Cooper kin neighborhood persisting into 1853
Caveats and follow-up
- High-resolution title-cartouche read — the publisher attribution (Robinson / Lightfoot / Geil & Smith / R. P. Smith / etc.) is the next data point worth capturing; testable from the ~69 MB full-resolution scan.
- ~~High-resolution Long Hill residence-label sweep~~ — PARTIALLY COMPLETED 2026-05-09 via maintainer's higher-quality zoom; W. Cooper + A. Cooper located adjacent on a Long Hill road shared with J. Millet, J.H. Wilson Est, J. Blake, and bordered W → E by D. Heath / A. Smith / Boyle / Inns Store and "Long Hill" ridge / Runyon / Gludlow. Remaining: read the wider Long Hill detail to confirm no other Cooper labels are still below the legibility threshold of the rendered crops; worth a second pass on (image held in the family archive) ~69 MB at maximum zoom along the entire Long Hill ridge + Passaic Twp roads.
- ~~Identify "W. Cooper" of 1853 Long Hill~~ — RESOLVED 2026-05-09 at primary-source-grade: William Cooper b. 1813 NJ Farmer $4,500 RE dwelling 305 1850 Morris Twp Morris Co. NJ. See D.233.
- Identify William Cooper b. 1813's parents — next research target. Possible cross-link to G.4's "John + Elinor Cooper of Long Hill" 1817-1821 (= William as their elder son, born ~4 years before Fanny). Test via 1820 + 1830 + 1840 census Morris Twp + Morris Co. probate / land records.
- Identify "A. Cooper" of 1853 Long Hill — strongest candidate Alexander Cooper b. 1828 NJ; dwelling # pending. Pull Alexander Cooper b. 1828's Ancestry record-detail for dwelling number. Then check whether his dwelling falls in the 307-333 range (= east of Blair 306, west of Henry R Wilson 334 — the same road segment as W. Cooper's 305). If so, A = Alexander locked. Also check pages 140-141 of Sam'l P. Hull Schedule I (Morris Twp 1850) for any additional Cooper-surname households in the dwelling 309-340 range that might emerge.
- Layer the 1853 map onto modern Long Hill Twp roads to determine which present-day road the Cooper houses sat on. The cemetery at G.4 is on Chestnut Street; whether the 1853 Cooper houses are on the same road is a testable geographic question. Useful landmarks for matching: the "Long Hill" ridge inscription (= the ridge present-day Long Hill Twp gets its name from), Runyon and Gludlow names at the east end, Boyle / Inns Store at the west.
- The "J.H. Wilson Est" Wilson household — outside scope but a 1853 Wilson estate adjacent to two Coopers may be discoverable via Morris Co. probate 1840-1853 if there is a Wilson-Cooper in-law tie that bears on the Cooper line.
- The lower-right town inset (possibly Madison or Morristown business district) may include a directory list naming Morris-Co. residents; testable from full-resolution scan.
