- Identification: 1868 atlas-plate of "Town of Passaic" (= Passaic Township, Morris Co., NJ — Passaic Twp was formed 1866 from parts of Chatham + Morris + Mendham + Hanover; later renamed Long Hill Twp in 1992). Plate shows multiple post offices (WHITE BRIDGE, MEYERSVILLE LONG HILL P.O., MILLINGTON P.O., PASSAIC VALLEY P.O.), district label DIST N° 6, schools, residences, and roads.

|---|---|---|
| Left cluster, west of W Cooper | A Cooper | NEW — no equivalent on I.62 1853 map. Appeared 1853-1868. Identity pending; possible son of William b. 1813, or other Cooper relation. |

Cross-reference to I.62 1853 wall map
The 1868 map shows the same east-west road as the 1853 wall map's Long Hill detail. Comparison:
| Map label | 1853 (I.62) | 1868 (this entry) | Persistence |
|---|---|---|---|
| W. Cooper | (William b. 1813 dwelling 305) | "W Cooper" | persists |
| A. Cooper | (Alexander b. 1828 dwelling 255 with J. Blake) | "A. Cooper" with J Blake | persists |
| (new "A" Cooper) | absent | "A Cooper" west of W Cooper | NEW 1853-1868 |
| J. Blake | (Joseph Blake dwelling 254) | "J Blake" | persists |
| J. Millet | (not visible on this clip) | possibly persists | |
| J.H. Wilson Est | (not visible on this clip; may have been cleared/relabeled if estate settled) | unknown | |
| Boyle / W Boyle | "AA Boyle" (south of road, near Millington) | likely descendants/successors | |
| A Dunn's Store | "ADunn" + "Store & PO" (near Millington) | persists (Abraham Dunn ~58 in 1868) | |
| Runyon | "B Runyon" (= Benjamin Runyon, son of David R. dwelling 289 1850?) | descendants | |
| Squier | "S Squier" | likely descendants | |
| Boyle | "AA Boyle" | likely descendants | |
| Heath | "D Heath" | "JL Heath" | descendants |
Key new finding: A THIRD Cooper household has been added to the road between 1853 and 1868. The new "A Cooper" is west of W Cooper (= William b. 1813) and east of N Gillem + JL Heath. Possible identities (interpretation, not data from this map):
- Son of William Cooper b. 1813 — if William had an "A___" son b. ~1840-1855, he would have come of age 1860-1875 and could be the new A Cooper. Would test via 1860 + 1870 census Morris Twp / Passaic Twp NJ for William b. 1813's children.
- Brother / nephew of Alexander Cooper b. 1828 — Alexander had a wife Abagail (1850) + widowed mother Susan (62 in 1850); if they had additional Cooper relatives who established a household by 1868, one could be the new A Cooper.
- Cooper relation arriving from elsewhere — e.g., a cousin migrating into the area from a different Morris Co. township (Hanover, Mendham, Chatham, Rockaway).
Caveats and follow-up
- Identify the NEW A Cooper of 1868 (left cluster, west of W Cooper) — primary-source target. Test paths:
- 1860 federal census Morris Twp Morris Co. NJ — Cooper-name search; bridges 1850-1870 and would surface any new Cooper households arriving 1850-1860
- 1870 federal census Passaic Twp Morris Co. NJ (post-1866 split) — Cooper-name search; should show all three 1868-map Coopers as living households in 1870
- Morris Co. deed grantor index 1853-1868 for any Cooper-name property transfers near W. Cooper or A. Cooper of 1853
- Morris Co. probate 1853-1870 for William b. 1813 or Alexander b. 1828 (in case either died and a successor took over a property)
- Pull the 1868 atlas plate at higher resolution to capture all dwelling numbers + verify exact reading of Cooper labels (left-cluster A vs middle-cluster A. spelling difference; visual placement of all 3 Coopers relative to road sides north/south).
- Cross-reference 1870 Passaic Twp census with this map's labels: if W Cooper, A Cooper (left), A. Cooper (middle), J Blake, P Murphy, S Squier, B Runyon, AA Boyle, A Dunn all appear in the 1870 enumeration adjacent to each other, that would primary-source-confirm the 1868 map's residence pattern.
- Check whether J.H. Wilson Est property persisted into 1868 — the 1853 map showed J.H. Wilson Est east of A. Cooper / J. Blake; the 1868 visible labels in that area are "AMoore" / "BLyne" / "WCornfield" / "ER Williams" — possibly the J.H. Wilson estate was settled and the property sold to one of these families.
- Note the label "B Runyon" at south edge near Passaic Valley — possibly Benjamin Runyon (b. ~1826 per D.233 David R. Runyon's son). If so, primary-source-confirms Runyon-line persistence into 1868.
- The 1868 map title "Town of Passaic" confirms the post-1866 township renaming (= Passaic Twp formed from parts of Chatham, Morris, Mendham, Hanover) per I.61 township-history reference.

- I.62 — 1853 Morris Co. wall map of the same area; W. Cooper + A. Cooper PRIMARY-SOURCE-LOCKED at dwellings 305 + 255 1850 Morris Twp; this 1868 map adds a third Cooper (the new "A Cooper" west of W Cooper)
- I.61 — Morris Co. township boundaries 1740 (orientation); confirms Passaic Twp formed 1866 from Chatham + Morris + Mendham + Hanover
- D.233 — 1850 Morris Twp Cooper enumeration; W. Cooper = William Cooper b. 1813 dwelling 305 + A. Cooper = Alexander Cooper b. 1828 dwelling 255 + Eleanor M. Cooper 66 + Catharine M. Cooper 25 dwelling 287 (third household, NOT map-labeled even in 1868 since they boarded with Smalley family rather than owning property)
- D.235 — 1860 Morris Twp Cooper enumeration: Alexander 32 with son William Jr 8 (first Y-line carrier); William 48 without wife; both still on Long Hill road
- D.236 — 1870 Passaic Twp Cooper enumeration (post-1866 split): Alexander 42 + 7 children incl. William Jr 18 + Abraham 8 = TWO Y-line carriers; William 58 + Martha H 46 + Margaret 17 = Y-line dead-end. Resolves the 1868 "third A Cooper" question only partially — Abraham 6 in 1868 too young for own household; the 1868 map's third Cooper remains unresolved (possibly a 1860-1868 transient, possibly a misread, possibly a Cooper relation outside the user's image clip)
- G.4 — Cooper Family Burying Ground Long Hill; the 1868 map's Cooper households are 4th-generation Daniel-Sr-line candidates whose deaths post-1868 may surface in the burying ground
