What this document records

Record

Paragraph in a town round-up column, reporting the removal of a body for burial

Date

18 APR 1925 (dateline ONTARIO, April 17)

Note

THE ONE RECORD THAT SAYS WHERE THE BODY WENT. The catalog had his death indexed in California [F.367] and reported in four papers, and no burial place at all. This paragraph says the body was to leave 'tomorrow evening' - i.e. Sunday 19 April 1925 - over the Santa Fe, with his son Joseph, for WALNUT SPRINGS, TEXAS, and that there would be no funeral service in California.

Reading notes

DATELINE 'ONTARIO, April 17' and 'instantly killed YESTERDAY' - a third newspaper putting the death on 16 April 1925, against 15 April on the California Death Index [F.367]. Recorded, not reconciled; see William G Cooper. 'their former home in Walnut Springs, Texas' IS WHAT THE PAPER SAYS. It says the body was SENT there; it does not say where he was buried. The distinction is kept on William G Cooper, where the burial is graded rather than asserted. The column's own dateline sits at the head of the whole column, several paragraphs above this item; the paragraph itself carries no separate date.

Leads

WALNUT SPRINGS, BOSQUE CO., TEXAS IS NOW A SPECIFIC PLACE TO SEARCH FOR HIS GRAVE - and his wife Rosa Caroline (Leonard) Cooper Rosa Caroline (Leonard) Cooper was buried at Walnut Springs in 1918 per her death certificate [F.368], so the two burials point at the same cemetery. A Find a Grave search of the Walnut Springs cemeteries, and a Bosque County burial or sexton record, are the next steps. The Santa Fe shipped the body; a railway transit permit or a Texas burial-transit permit for April 1925 would be a further record if either survives.

Body of George William Cooper, aged 49 years, who was instantly killed yesterday when a hoisting machine at a well owned by the Euclid Water company on Benson avenue collapsed and a fragment of iron was hurled through his chest, will leave tomorrow evening over the Santa Fe, accompanied by the son, Joseph Cooper, for their former home in Walnut Springs, Texas. There will be no funeral services here. Local arrangements are in charge of J. B[?]. Draper.
