NJ State Archives Early Land Records 1650-1900s database — Middlesex Co. NJ Runyon-surname search, 10 records 1679-1771. Catalog-defining context: extends Runyon-family-of-origin trace for [p.148 Grace Runyon Cooper](../../people/p.148%20Grace%20Runyon%20Cooper.md) (b. 17 Jan 1706/7 — d. 1755, first wife of [p.1 Daniel Cooper Sr](../../people/p.1%20Daniel%20Cooper%201695-1795.md)) into 17th-century Piscataway proprietary records. Vincent Runyon = catalog's earliest documented Piscataway Runyon (1679 Munday conveyance A.236; 1685-86 adjoining-landowner survey L.172-174; 1687 Hopewell Hull 70-acre Raritan deed D.30-31). Peter Runyon = next-generation Piscataway Runyon (1741 + 1744 Ambrose Brook surveys totaling 184.66 acres). Reune Runyon Jr (1769 Marlet/Webster Piscataway witness) + Reuben Runyon (1771 Molleson/Hooper New Windsor witness) = third-generation post-1700 Piscataway Runyons. John Runyon (1766) = shop-owner Bound Brook Piscataway in £162 mortgage. Compares with K.2 finding of Reziah Runyon (Yeoman) of Piscataway 14 Dec 1720 Hunterdon F-2 (EJ) Folio 33 conveyance to Daniel Cooper (Weaver) of Hunterdon = pre-marriage portion candidate for Grace × Daniel Sr. The Vincent → Peter → Reune Jr / Reuben / John progression suggests Vincent ≈ Grace's grandfather generation; Peter / Reune Sr generation ≈ Grace's parents' generation.

- OTHERS NAMED (manuscript): John Stelle (Deputy Surveyor); James Alexander (Surveyor General; Signatory); John Drumitt + William Drumitt (Grantors of underlying deed); Council of Proprietors (warrant authority)
- Boundary marker note: "White Oak Tree Marked on four sides whereon is the Letters P.R." = Peter Runyon's personal-initial blaze carved on a white oak boundary tree = exemplifies 18th-c. EJ surveying personal-marker practice.
- LOCATIONS: East Jersey; Middlesex; Piscataway; Ambroses Brook
- Reference: S1 (EJ Surveys) Folio 189-190 (PEASJ003)
- Catalog significance: Peter Runyon's earliest documented Middlesex landholding now primary-source-locked: on the East side of Ambrose's Brook within Piscataway township, at a corner identified as "Runyon's" = implying prior-existing Runyon land at this corner before the 1741 acquisition. = primary-source-locks Runyon-family continuous Ambrose-Brook presence from the 1685-86 Gilman survey [Vincent Runyon adjoining] through 1741 [Peter Runyon grantee]. The corner-naming "Runyon's" connects the unspecified-Runyon adjoining-landowner pattern to Peter's specific 1741 tract. James Alexander = Surveyor General = primary-source-attested 3 years BEFORE the K.5 Daniel-Cooper-James-Alexander Green Brook Falls 1744 transaction.
Record 3 — Runyon, Peter (Owner of adjoining land; Named) — 12 Oct 1742 — Piscataway 9.5 acres — [verbatim search-result]
- TO: David Corriell
- FROM: Joshua Smalley
- Type: SURVEY. 9.5 acres. Piscataway Township; Middlesex County.
- OTHERS NAMED: James Alexander (Surveyor General); John Burnet (Former owner of land); George Mallette (Owner of adjoining land); Peter Runyon (Owner of adjoining land); Lawrence Smyth (Deputy Surveyor General); John Stelle (Deputy Surveyor)
- LOCATIONS: East Jersey; Middlesex; Piscataway
- Reference: S1 (EJ Surveys) Folio 251 (PEASJ003)
- View PDF: YES
- Catalog significance: Peter Runyon as adjoining-landowner on David Corriell / Joshua Smalley Piscataway survey. David Corriell is a name to flag — note that "Coriell"/"Corriell" appears in pr.16 (Cooper-Coriell Y-DNA mystery per memory
user_chris_cooper_ancestry.md). 1742 David Corriell Piscataway adjoining-Peter-Runyon = early geographic Coriell-Runyon-Piscataway intersection.
Record 4 — Runyon, Peter (Grantee) — 17 May 1744 — Ambrose Brook 132.16 acres [verbatim manuscript read 2026-05-23]
- TO: Peter Runyon
- FROM: Survey via underlying Lease from John Drumitt + William Drumitt for £15 dated 8 April [1744] for 130 acres unappropriated (= recorded Lib A.B 99 fol 6); part of John Drumitt's 1721-acre warrant dated 3 April [1740] recorded Lib W. 4 f° [3]
- Manuscript verbatim (extract): "These do Certify that John Stelle by me duly Deputed and Sworn to the intent herein after mentioned did Survey for Peter Runyon All that Tract of Land in the County of Middlesex Begining at a small Walnutt Tree marked on four sides standing on the North East Side of Ambrose's Brook at the [Mouth?] of a Ditch Venting into the [—] Brook from thence running down the Brook [— extensive metes-and-bounds —] thence by [—] to a Large Walnut Tree being the South West Corner of a small Lott thence [—] bordering [boundary corner of a small Lott which Daniel Blackford bought of John Mollison] [—] thence [—] to a Large White Oake Tree being a Corner of David Coriell's Land [—] containing one hundred and thirty two Acres and Sixteen hundreds the strict Measure which after Allowance for Highways is to Remain for one hundred and twenty Acres and Sixty seven hundredths of an Acre..."

- Closing (folio 28): "...to which the said Peter Runyon is Entitled by Virtue of a Lease for £15. of the said John Drumitt and William Drumitt for one hundred and thirty Acres of Land Unappropriated dated the 8th of April [1744] and Recorded in Lib A.B 99 fol 6. the same being part of a Warrant to the said John Drumitt for 1721 acres dated the 3rd of April Last and Recorded in Lib W. 4. f° [3]. Witness my hand the 7th of May 1744. Jas. Alexander Surv'r Gen'l"
- OTHERS NAMED (manuscript): John Stelle (Deputy Surveyor); James Alexander (Surveyor General; Signatory); John Drumitt + William Drumitt (Grantors of underlying lease); David Coriell (Owner of adjoining land — = same Coriell family relevant to memory
user_chris_cooper_ancestry.mdpr.16 Cooper-Coriell Y-DNA mystery, though 100+ years before the 1842 NPE-presumed event; geographic data only); Daniel Blackford (Owner of adjoining land, having bought small lot from John Mollison); John Mollison (Former owner of land sold to Blackford). - LOCATIONS: East Jersey; Middlesex; Ambrose's Brook (NE side)
- Reference: S2 (EJ Surveys) Folio 27-28 (PEASJ003)
- Catalog significance: Peter Runyon's largest documented Ambrose Brook tract. Combined with Record 2 (52.5 acres west side, 1741) + this 132.16-acre NE-side tract, Peter held 184.66 acres at Ambrose Brook by 1744. The boundary corner "Large White Oake Tree being a Corner of David Coriell's Land" = primary-source-attests the 1744 Coriell-Runyon-Piscataway/Ambrose-Brook adjacency (= 2 years before Record 3's 1742 Corriell-Runyon adjacency on Smalley's tract). Mollison-Blackford small lot = same Mollison family as K.12 Record 6 (1771 Molleson-Hooper Reuben-Runyon-witnessed conveyance).
Record 5 — Runyon, Peter (Named) — 18 Sept 1766 — Ambrose Brook Harrison heirs resurvey — [verbatim search-result]
- TO: John Harrison (Late of Rocky Hill; Heirs or Assigns of)
- FROM: (proprietary resurvey)
- Type: RESURVEY. Near Ambrose Brook; [Unappropriated Land] [Possibly Middlesex County]. "60 acres more or less being the land the said John Harrison hath taken up as Part of his Share of a Propriety, as by the said deed Recorded in the Secretarys Office in Book BB the same with small Book K, Page 115, may appear, but there is no Survey to be found on Record to the said John Harrison for the said Land." "Whereas the said Elizabet Merlott by deed dated July 18, 1722… did Convey the said Tract of land to Abraham Bodine… did convey the same to Lucas Billieu" "The Tract sold by John Harrison to Elizabeth Merlott is Contained within the the Boundaries of the said survey made to Peter Runyon and that the Bounds of the Tract aforesaid Sold by Harrison Contain 74.25 acres Strict Measure. Wherefore the Heirs or Assigns of the said John Harrison deceased (which the said Lucas Billieu Claims to be as before is set forth) have Right to 70.71 acres of Land with the usual allowance for highways to be Surveyed to them or their assigns in any Part Unappropriated in the Eastern Division of New Jersey, Except Romopock.". (See also: K, 115; S2, 27; W4, 3; AB5, 433; AB5, 435).
- OTHERS NAMED: William Alexander (Surveyor General) (Signatory); Lucas Billieu; Abraham Bodine; Azariah Dunham (Deputy Surveyor); Abraham Merlott (Deceased; Late husband of Elizabeth Merlott); Elizabeth Merlott (Of Piscataway; Heirs or Assigns of; Wife of Abraham Merlott); Peter Runyon
- LOCATIONS: East Jersey; Middlesex; Somerset; Unappropriated Land; Piscataway; Ambroses Brook
- Reference: S5 (EJ Surveys) Folio 321 (PEASJ003)
- View PDF: No (Select-only)
- Catalog significance: Peter Runyon's 1744 Ambrose Brook tract (Record 4 / 132.16 acres NE side) overlaps with John Harrison's prior 60-acre Ambrose Brook holding (= 74.25 acres strict measure per resurvey). 1722 Elizabeth Merlott → Abraham Bodine → Lucas Billieu chain of title within Peter Runyon's larger tract. NJ Surveyor General William Alexander = Lord Stirling = primary-source-locks Stirling-network involvement in Runyon-family-Middlesex landholding boundary disputes 1766. Elizabeth Merlott "of Piscataway" 1722 = same Merlott as Record 1 John Runyon "Shop formerly Marlatts" = primary-source-locks Marlatt/Merlott/Marlet/Marlott surname-variant cluster Piscataway 1722-1769.
Record 6 — Runyon, Reuben (Witness; Named) — 14 May 1771 — New Windsor — [verbatim search-result]
- TO: Nicholas Hooper
- FROM: John Molleson (ux, of Piscataway); Kesia Molleson (of Piscataway)
- Type: CONVEYANCE. Lots in New Windsor, Middlesex County. Dated 6-8-1760. Witnesses: Francis Holman and Reuben Runyon.
- OTHERS NAMED: Francis Holman (Witness); Reuben Runyon (Witness)
- LOCATIONS: East Jersey; Middlesex; New Windsor
- Reference: F-3 (EJ) Folio 314 (SSTSE023)
- View PDF: No (Select-only)
- Catalog significance: Reuben Runyon witness to 1760 Molleson-Hooper conveyance (recorded 14 May 1771). 11-year recording delay. John Molleson of Piscataway = same Piscataway-family network as other Runyons. New Windsor = Middlesex Co. township; not the New Windsor of Orange Co. NY. First documented Reuben Runyon in catalog.
Record 7 — Runyon, Reune, Jr. (Witness; Named) — 7 Jan 1769 — Piscataway salt meadow — [verbatim search-result]
- TO: John Webster
- FROM: George Marlet
- Type: CONVEYANCE. Piscataway, Middlesex County. One acre of salt meadow, recorded May 9, 1770. Witnesses: Reune Runyon, Jr., and William Williamson, Jr.
- OTHERS NAMED: Reune Runyon, Jr. (Witness); William Williamson, Jr. (Witness)
- LOCATIONS: East Jersey; Middlesex; Piscataway; Great Salt Meadow
- Reference: F-3 (EJ) Folio 157 (SSTSE023)
- View PDF: No (Select-only)
- Catalog significance: Reune Runyon, Jr. witness 1769 = implies Reune Runyon Sr. existed in Piscataway pre-1769. George Marlet = same Marlatt/Marlet/Merlott family as Records 1 + 5. 'Reune' = variant spelling of 'Runyon'? Possibly the given name 'Reune' is a corruption of the family-name 'Runyon' (= the family's earlier Dutch-language name pre-Anglicization). First documented Reune Runyon Jr. in catalog.
Record 8 — Runyon, Vincent (Grantee) — 20 Feb 1687 — Raritan River 70 acres [verbatim manuscript read 2026-05-23]
- TO: Vincent Runyon
- FROM: Hopewell Hull (Yeoman) (of "the Township of Piscataway in the County of Middlesex in the Eastern Division of the Province of New Jersey")
- Manuscript verbatim (extract): "To all to whom this present writing [—] come greeting. Know yee that I Hopewell Hull of the [—] of Piscataway in the County of Middlesex in the Eastern Division of the Province of New Jersey Yeoman... I do hereby acknowledge [—] [—] sold unto the above named Vincent Runyon Seventy acres of upland Lying upon the Raritan River Begining at a [stake?] planted by his folks [—] [—] head [— line — ] which was formerly Jaboz Hendricks Land from thence running [—] degrees North forty four Chains to another Stake marked on four sides [—] [—] running North easterly making him to Cooch[?] [—] thence running west by South easterly Chains upon Edward Slater's land..." — closing: "In witness whereof I [Hopewell] [Hull?] said this [fou(rt)eenth?] day of February [Anno Domini] one thousand six hundred Eighty & Seaven. Hopewell [Hull]. Signed [&] Delivered in the presence of Edward Slatter, Josiah Higgins."
- Acreage: Seventy acres of upland Lying upon the Raritan River (= matches NJSA 70 acres)
- OTHERS NAMED (manuscript): Jaboz [Jabez] Hendricks (Former owner of adjoining land); Edward Slatter (Owner of adjoining land AND Witness; same Edward Slater as K.12 Record 10 / L.[number removed]-86 Gilman survey adjoining); Josiah Higgins (Witness; same Higgens/Higgins family as K.14 [K.12 Record 9] 1679 deed witness — possibly same individual)
- LOCATIONS: Middlesex; Piscataway; Raritan River
- Reference: D (EJ) Folio 30-31 (SSTSE023)
- Catalog significance: ** Catalog's earliest Vincent Runyon Middlesex landholding = 70 acres on Raritan River, ~14 Feb 1687/8. Edward Slatter/Slater attestation as both adjoining-landowner AND witness shows Slater's role as Piscataway proprietary-tier landowner spanning 1685 → 1687 → later. Josiah Higgins witness role probably same individual as [—] Higgens of K.14 1679 deed (= same Piscataway witness across 8 years). Jabez Hendricks "formerly" — = late-1670s-1680s Piscataway settler; Hendricks family parallel-tier to Vincent Runyon. NJSA index lists "Atus Higgins (Former owner of adjoining land)"** — manuscript however shows "Jaboz Hendricks" as the former adjoining owner; Atus Higgins reading may be NJSA-index error transposing the Josiah Higgins witness role to adjoining-landowner role.
Record 9 — Runyon, Vincent (Grantor) — 7 Feb 1679 — Piscataway Munday conveyance [verbatim manuscript read] → see dedicated entry K.14
See dedicated entry K.14 for full manuscript verbatim transcription. Manuscript read 2026-05-23. Deed acknowledged 30 January 1678/9 (Old Style) by Vincent Runyon of Piscataway, conveying "all my Right, Title and Interest unto a Certain Meadow Lying or being in Piscataway" bounded W by Munday + E by [Richard?] Smith + George[?]. Witnesses: Jeffrey Manning + [—] Higgens [Higgins]. Recorded ~7 Feb 1679 per NJSA index. = catalog's foundational primary-source attestation for Vincent Runyon's presence at Piscataway by 1679.
Record 10 — Runyon, Vincent ([Runen]; Owner of adjoining land; Named) — 1685-1686 — Piscataway Gilman survey [verbatim manuscript read 2026-05-23]
- TO: John Gilman, Sr.
- FROM: (proprietary survey)
- Manuscript verbatim (extract): "Surveyed for John Gillman Senior in pursuance of two warrants dated December [—] 1685 — and 7 June 1685. Three places land in upland in the [Piscataway township?] [—] beginning at a tree marked on three sides of [—] thence running [—] [—] joining Mr. [—] Hugh Dunn['s] Land, thence West by South easterly Chains to another stake marked [—] running by [—] [—] of [— —] of [Vincent] Runyon [or 'Reuen' / 'Runen'] thence [—] [—] [—] [—] bounded by Mr. John Edmondson's Land..." — also referenced: Eleakim Higgens [Eliakim Higgins], Ambrose Brook
- OTHERS NAMED (manuscript): Hugh Dunn (Owner of adjoining land); Vincent Runyon ([Runen]; Owner of adjoining land); John Edmondson (Owner of adjoining land); Eleakim Higgens [Eliakim Higgins] (Owner of adjoining land). NJSA index supplies additional adjoining: Benjamin Dunham, Emond Dunham, Benjamin Hull, Hopewell Hull, John Langstaff, Edward Slater, Samuel Walker, Andrew Wooden (= the broader proprietary neighborhood cluster).
- Warrant dates per manuscript: December [—] 1685 + 7 June 1685 = TWO warrants underlying this survey (NJSA index gives only single warrant date 15 Sept 1685; manuscript provides actual underlying dates).
- LOCATIONS: East Jersey; Middlesex; Piscataway; Ambroses Brook; Raritan River
- Reference: L (EJ) Folio 172-174 (PEASJ003)
- Catalog significance: ** 1685-86 Piscataway proprietary neighborhood snapshot confirmed verbatim. Vincent Runyon's variant spelling "[Runen]" appears in manuscript directly. Same Vincent Runyon = K.14 (1679) grantor + K.12 Record 8 (1687) grantee = adjacent records in continuous 8-year span**.
Multi-generational Runyon presence at Piscataway / Ambrose Brook
| Generation | Person | Earliest record | Latest record | Span |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1st (grantor era) | Vincent Runyon | 7 Feb 1679 (Record 9) | 20 Feb 1687 (Record 8) | 8 years; possibly more before 1679 + after 1687 |
| (gap of ~54 years) | ||||
| 2nd (mid-18th-c) | Peter Runyon | 24 Jun 1741 (Record 2) | 18 Sept 1766 (Record 5) | 25+ years |
| 3rd (late 18th-c) | John Runyon | 11 Jul 1766 (Record 1) | (single record) | snapshot |
| 3rd | Reune Runyon, Jr. | 7 Jan 1769 (Record 7) | (single record) | snapshot |
| 3rd | Reuben Runyon | 14 May 1771 (Record 6, witnessing 1760-dated conveyance) | (single record) | snapshot |
Note the 54-year gap between Vincent Runyon's last record (1687) and Peter Runyon's first record (1741). Three possibilities: 1. Generational gap — Vincent Runyon's son and/or grandson held land 1687-1741 but no Middlesex land transactions are in this NJSA database. Could be East Jersey records OR private family transactions OR records lost. 2. Migration in/out — Vincent moved elsewhere or died young; Peter Runyon migrated into Piscataway separately later. 3. Record gap — NJSA database may have lacunae for this period.
Most likely (1) given consistent Ambrose Brook + Piscataway geography across Vincent → Peter generations.
Relevance to p.148 Grace Runyon Cooper
Grace b. 17 Jan 1706/7 = mid-point of the 1687-1741 gap. Possible parental candidates: - A son of Vincent Runyon (b. ~1680-1690 = age 16-26 at Grace's 1706/7 birth) — most parsimonious geographically (Vincent active Piscataway 1679-1687, Grace's natal family also Piscataway per F.68 RDC register 1728) - A separate Runyon-line immigrant 1687-1700 who settled adjacent Vincent's Piscataway land - Reziah Runyon (Yeoman) of Piscataway per K.2 14 Dec 1720 Hunterdon conveyance — was age ~30+ in 1720 (since "Yeoman" status implies established adult), thus possibly = Grace's father (age ~25+ at Grace's 1706/7 birth) IF Reziah = Vincent's son.
Open trace path: Pull Vincent Runyon's will + Reziah Runyon's will from NJ State Archives probate database (per memory reference_njsa_searchable_databases.md); search Piscataway RDC + First Baptist records 1700-1730 for baptisms of Vincent Runyon's children + Reziah Runyon's marriage record.
Cross-references
- K.2 Reziah Runyon Hunterdon 1720 → Daniel Cooper Weaver — candidate-father of p.148 per existing K.2 finding; K.12 provides Vincent → Peter context but does NOT explicitly attest Reziah in Middlesex (Reziah's 1720 record is Hunterdon, not Middlesex).
- K.11 NJSA Middlesex Cooper search — companion-search; K.11 Record 11 (John Cooper 1684 Piscataway witness) names Benjamin Hull alongside; K.12 Record 8+10 name same Hull family (Hopewell Hull + Benjamin Hull) = primary-source-locks early Piscataway Cooper-Hull-Runyon proprietary network 1684-1687.
- K.5 Daniel Cooper 1744 Green Brook Falls × James Alexander — James Alexander (Surveyor General) appears in K.12 Records 2 + 3 (Peter Runyon 1741 + 1742 surveys) = primary-source-locks Runyon-Alexander-network 3 years BEFORE Daniel-Cooper-Alexander Green Brook Falls transaction.
- p.148 Grace Runyon Cooper — to be upgraded with K.12 multi-generational Piscataway-Runyon context.
- pr.2 Daniel Sr father search — relevant indirectly via Grace's family-of-origin (= Daniel Sr's mother-in-law family).
Follow-ups
- [ ] ** Pull Tier-1 PDFs:** Vincent Runyon 1679 A.236 (= earliest Vincent Piscataway record); Vincent Runyon 1687 D.30-31 (= 70-acre Raritan Hopewell Hull grantee); Vincent Runyon 1685-86 L.172-174 (= 300-acre Gilman survey with full Piscataway neighborhood); Peter Runyon 1741 S1.189-190 (= 52.5 acres Ambrose Brook); Peter Runyon 1744 S2.27 (= 132.16 acres Ambrose Brook). 5 highest-priority Runyon manuscript pulls.
- [ ] ** Create Vincent Runyon people-file stub** (= candidate Runyon-line patriarch contributing to p.148 Grace Runyon's paternal-line ancestry). p.X ID needed.
- [ ] ** Create Peter Runyon people-file stub** (= candidate Runyon-line member contemporary with Grace's parents' generation). p.X ID needed.
- [ ] ** Resolve Vincent → Peter generational connection** — pull NJ Archives probate database for Vincent Runyon's will (if extant) + Reziah Runyon's will (per K.2) + any 1700-1730 Runyon Piscataway records.
- [ ] ** Upgrade p.148 Grace Runyon Cooper** with K.12 Vincent → Peter Runyon Piscataway/Ambrose Brook 81-year continuous attestation context.
- [ ] ** Pull Records 3 + 5 (Peter Runyon adjoining David Corriell 1742 + Harrison heirs resurvey 1766)** — Record 3 = Coriell-Runyon-Piscataway 1742 intersection (relevant to memory
user_chris_cooper_ancestry.mdpr.16 Cooper-Coriell Y-DNA mystery — but is mid-18th-century, post-NPE-presumed 1842 by 100 years; geographic data only). - [ ] ** Pull Marlatt/Merlott/Marlet/Marlott surname-cluster** — K.12 Records 1+5+7 all show this Piscataway family-name 1722-1769; same family. Tangential to Grace Runyon trace but important for understanding Piscataway social context.
- [ ] ** Verify Reune Runyon, Jr. ≠ separate Runyon line** — given name "Reune" suspicious; possibly = "Runyon Runyon Jr." (= a Junior version of the family-name-as-given-name pattern common in NJ Dutch families). Acquire manuscript to verify spelling.
- [ ] ** Verify Reuben Runyon ≠ same as Reune Runyon, Jr.** — different given names but both adult-male-witness role 1769-1771. Possibly same person with variant spelling, or distinct individuals.
