NJ State Archives Early Land Records 1650-1900s database — Bergen Co. NJ 4-way surname sweep (Cooper + Kuyper + Cuyper + Cowper), 34 records 1704-1817 (10 of 14 Cooper records page-1 only; full Kuyper/Cuyper/Cowper). CATALOG-DEFINING NULL FINDING for [pr.63 Daniel Sr 1720-1744 catalog gap](../../projects/pr.63%20Daniel%20Sr%201720-1744%20catalog%20gap.md): ZERO Daniel Cooper / Daniel Kuyper / Daniel Cuyper records in Bergen Co. across the entire 1650-1900s span. The Holland-origin tradition's expected Bergen footprint at our Daniel's name is ABSENT. = H1 Bergen-Dutch-resident hypothesis for Daniel Sr's 1720-1744 gap is WEAKENED at the NJSA land-records level. Cowper-spelling = ZERO records (= primary-source-confirms Bergen-area Coopers used Cooper/Cuyper/Kuyper spellings exclusively, not the Scottish-Lowland Cowper variant). NEW Bergen-Cooper-line records 1714-1726 — likely [fam.13 Kuyper-Cooper](../../families/fam.13%20Kuyper-Cooper%20of%20Rockland%20NY%20%2B%20Bergen%20NJ.md) attestations: (a) 1714 Bergen City conveyance Anna + Cornelius Cuyper (ux) → Hendrick Cuyper (E-3 EJ Folio 178) = Cornelius-Anna-Hendrick fam.13 cluster; (b) 18 Aug 1721 Cornelius Cooper adjoining-landowner on Brower mill conveyance Hackensack/Saddle River Bergen Co Deed Book A Folio 204-207; (c) 12 May 1722 Cornelius Cooper Witness on Lazeir → Bardan 137-ac Wykhoop/Ramapough deed Bergen Co Deeds Vol A Folio 153-156; (d) 23 May 1726 Cornelius Cuyper Witness on Magdelen Valleau widow → Tise 200-ac Romopock deed Bergen Co Deeds Vol A Folio 79-80 (= 36 days AFTER Daniel Sr × Grace Runyon's 17 Apr 1726 Piscataway marriage). The Cuyper/Cooper spelling toggle on the same Cornelius across 1714-1726 documents the Anglicization-in-progress for at least one Bergen Cuyper-Cooper line. Hendericus Kuyper Esq. of Bergen Township 1764-1783 = a separate later 16-record cluster (Bergen Township Commissioner / Judge / Common-Lands lot-holder), too late for Daniel-Sr-father consideration but candidate later-generation [fam.13](../../families/fam.13%20Kuyper-Cooper%20of%20Rockland%20NY%20%2B%20Bergen%20NJ.md) member. Other surfaces: Clyde Johnston Cooper adjoining-landowner Hackensack/Saddle River 16 Jan 1704; later Cornelius Cooper Witness 1770 + 1775 (= probable next-generation; ≥45 yrs after the 1721-1726 Cornelius); Benjamin B. Cooper 1806-1807 + Abraham Cooper 1817 + John Cooper Chain Bearer 1794 + Peter Cooper Chain Bearer 1792 = post-Revolution Bergen Cooper-line individuals.

| Catalog discovery context | Bergen sweep performed at my recommendation 28 May 2026 in direct response to pr.63 Daniel Sr 1720-1744 catalog gap Priority-1 question. Goal: test whether our Daniel Sr (or a Dutch-spelling "Daniel Kuyper") surfaces in Bergen Co. records during the 1720-1744 gap (= H1 Bergen-Dutch-origin hypothesis). |
About the NJSA Early Land Records database
See K.1 for full database description (75,210 land records / 385,383 name entries / 120+ record books; East Jersey Survey Books L, O, and Liber II indexed; results capped at 500/search; post-1785 records mostly at county level, not in this database).
CATALOG-DEFINING NULL FINDING — Daniel Cooper search
Daniel Cooper / Daniel Kuyper / Daniel Cuyper in Bergen Co. = ZERO records 1650-1900s
Across all 4 surname-variant searches (Cooper, Kuyper, Cuyper, Cowper) filtered to Bergen County, no record names any Daniel-given-name individual in the 1650-1900s window. The 34 records returned belong to other given-names (Abraham, Benjamin B., Clyde Johnston, Cornelius, John, Peter, Hendricus, Hendericus, Catarina, Anna, Hendrick).
Implication for pr.63
Hypothesis H1 (Daniel Sr was Bergen-Dutch-origin and lived in Bergen Co. during the 1720-1744 gap) is WEAKENED at the NJSA-land-records level:
- No Daniel Cooper / Daniel Kuyper / Daniel Cuyper land transaction, witness role, or adjoining-landowner mention exists in the Bergen Co. NJSA Early Land Records index.
- This does NOT disprove H1 outright (= Daniel could have been a non-landowner tenant, a child living in his father's household, or under a Dutch alternate-spelling not searched). But it removes the strongest expected piece of evidence for H1.
- It does NOT impact the Holland-origin tradition itself (I.36 House of Cooper 1946's claim that Daniel's father was a Hollander) — only the specific hypothesis that Daniel was personally Bergen-resident pre-1744.
What this Bergen-NULL DOES surface
- Bergen had a discrete Cuyper/Cooper Dutch-spelling family in the 1714-1726 window — the Cornelius Cuyper × Anna + Hendrick Cuyper cluster (E-3 EJ Folio 178 single-deed 1714) + Cornelius-as-Witness-or-adjoining 1721 + 1722 + 1726 records. Likely fam.13 members. This proves the Bergen Dutch-Cooper community existed and was documented; it just doesn't contain our Daniel.
- The 1726 record dates 36 days AFTER Daniel Sr × Grace Runyon's 17 Apr 1726 Piscataway marriage — Cornelius Cuyper Witness at Romopock 23 May 1726 — temporal proximity is notable but geographic separation (Bergen ↔ Piscataway = ~30 miles) makes direct overlap unlikely. May still warrant manuscript pull to test for any kinship indication in the deed body.
- The "Cowper" Scottish-Lowland spelling = NULL in Bergen = primary-source-confirms Bergen Coopers used Cooper / Cuyper / Kuyper spellings exclusively.

Cooper Record 3 — Cooper, Benjamin B. (Grantor) — 11 Jul 1806

Cooper Record 4 — Cooper, Clyde Johnston (Owner of adjoining land) (Named) — 16 Jan 1704
- TO: Zarian Westervelt
- FROM: John Berry (Major)
- Type: CONVEYANCE. 234 acres. Hackensack River and Saddle River; Bergen County.

- Reference: Bergen Co Deed Book A: Folio 14-16 (CBECL005)
- Status: Available at NJ Archives on microfilm for in-person research only. For original records Contact Bergen County Clerk.
- Catalog significance: Earliest Bergen Cooper-name attestation (1704). "Clyde Johnston" = unusual Scotch-Irish-style given-name pair; geography (Hackensack/Saddle River) overlaps the 1721+1722 Cornelius Cooper geography 17-18 years later, but no surname-Cooper continuity is provable from this single 1704 record.
Cooper Record 5 — Cooper, Cornelius (Witness) (Named) — 12 May 1722
- TO: John Bardan
- FROM: Cornelius Lazeir; Jane Lazeir
- Type: DEED. 137 acres. At a place called Wykhoop, within the branch of Ramapough; Town of Franklin, formerly Saddle River Precinct; Bergen County. [Transcribed from Liber D of Deeds, page 61]; For the sum of £550 Lawful Money.

- LOCATIONS: East Jersey; Bergen; Franklin Township; Ramapock; Romopock; Ramapo; Wickaken; Saddle River
- Reference: Bergen Co Deeds Volume A: Folio 153-156 (CPARD003)
- Status: Available at NJ Archives on microfilm for in-person research only. For original records Contact Bergen County Clerk.
- ** Catalog significance: In gap window 1720-1744.** Same Cornelius Cooper geography (Saddle River / Ramapo / Bergen) as the 1721 adjoining-landowner attestation 9 months earlier (Record 8 below). Cornelius's spelling here = "Cooper" English form; toggles to "Cuyper" on the 1726 Romopock Witness record (= Cuyper Search Record 3 below). Andrew Johnston as adjoining-landowner is potentially the same Andrew Johnston / Dr. John Johnston who appears in K.2 Daniel Cooper Weaver of Hunterdon 1720 deed as part of the EJ Proprietor titling chain — direct social-network overlap with our Daniel Sr's 1720 attestation.

- Reference: Bergen Co Mortgages Book A: Folio 94-95 (CBECL008)
- Status: Available at NJ Archives on microfilm for in-person research only.
- Note: 48 years after the 1722 Cornelius Cooper Witness = likely DIFFERENT Cornelius (= son or grandson of 1722 attestee).
Cooper Record 7 — Cooper, Cornelius (Witness) (Named) — 1 May 1775
- TO: Peter Demarest (Cooper)
- FROM: Jacobus Alyea (Yeoman) (Brother of Abraham Aleyea)
- Type: MORTGAGE. 50 acres. By a highway; Bergen County. Paid £100. Recorded May 23, 1776. Notation at margin: This mortgage was paid off and cancelled, dated April 17, 1784.
- OTHERS NAMED: Abraham Alyea (Brother of Jacobus Alyea; Former owner of land); Cornelius Cooper (Witness); Abraham Hopper (Owner of adjoining land); Abraham Westervelt (Clerk) (Signatory); Peter Zabriskie; Peter Zabriskie (Judge)
- LOCATIONS: East Jersey; Bergen; Lots, Allotments; Roads, Streets, Highways, Paths
- Reference: Bergen Co Mortgages Book A: Folio 133 (CBECL008)
- Status: Available at NJ Archives on microfilm for in-person research only.
- Note: Same later-generation Cornelius Cooper as Record 6 (= 5 years apart). NB: GRANTEE here is "Peter Demarest (Cooper)" = Cooper as TRADE designation, not surname — i.e., Peter Demarest the barrel-maker, not a Demarest-named-Cooper.
Cooper Record 8 — Cooper, Cornelius (Owner of adjoining land) (Named) — 18 Aug 1721
- TO: Eldrick Brower (Weaver)
- FROM: Abraham Brower (Executor of John Demarest); Peter Demarest (Executor of John Demarest)

- LOCATIONS: Bergen; Hackensack River; Saddle River; Mills; Mill Lots
- Reference: Bergen Co Deed Book A: Folio 204-207 (CBECL005)
- Status: Available at NJ Archives on microfilm for in-person research only.
- ** Catalog significance: In gap window 1720-1744. Cornelius Cooper owns land adjoining a 6-ac mill conveyance on Hackensack/Saddle River. Grantee = "Eldrick Brower (Weaver)" — the same Weaver trade** that K.2 Daniel Cooper of Hunterdon 14 Dec 1720 attests for our Daniel Sr 8 months earlier. Trade-coincidence noted but no direct kinship implied.
Cooper Record 9 — Cooper, John (Chain Bearer) (Named) — 7 Nov 1794
- TO: Richard Penn (Heirs and Assigns of; At the request of Doctor Samuel Seward); Thomas Penn (Heirs and Assigns of; At the request of Doctor Samuel Seward); Samuel Seward (Doctor) (Also owner of adjoining plantation)

- LOCATIONS: East Jersey; Bergen; Saddle River Township; Plantations
- Reference: EJ Loose Records: S10-373(a) (65169) (PEASJ003)
- Status: Select available
- ** Catalog significance:** William Earl of Stirling = Lord Stirling, attested as owner of adjoining 11.48-ac in 1794 = 11 years after his actual death 1783. = "owner of adjoining land" reflects historical record-state, not current ownership. The Bergen-Saddle-River-Stirling-overlap is a relevant late attestation for the Cooper-Stirling connection (cf. K.5 + K.10 + K.16 Cooper-Stirling chain).
Cooper Record 10 — Cooper, Peter (Chain Bearer) (Named) — 28 Aug 1792
- TO: Henry Cuyler, the Elder (Heirs and Assigns of); James Parker (at the request of Abraham Vanderhoof; On a right of location; Also owner of adjoining house); Abraham Vanderhoof

Cuyper Record 3 — Cuyper, Cornelius (Witness) (Named) — 23 May 1726

- LOCATIONS: East Jersey; Bergen; Ramapock; Romopock; Ramapo
- Reference: Bergen Co Deeds Volume A: Folio 79-80 (CPARD003)
- Status: Available at NJ Archives on microfilm for in-person research only.
- ** Catalog significance: In gap window 1720-1744. Date = 23 May 1726 = 36 days after Daniel Sr × Grace Runyon's 17 Apr 1726 marriage in Piscataway. Cornelius CUYPER spelling here vs CORNELIUS COOPER 4 days earlier (= 1726 Cooper Witness Records 5 + 8 above) — same person, alternate spelling**, OR two different Bergen-resident Cornelius-individuals. Manuscript pull of the 1726 + 1722 + 1721 deed bodies would settle the question.
Cuyper Record 4 — Cuyper, Hendrick (Grantee) — 12 Jun 1714
- TO: Hendrick Cuyper
- FROM: Anna Cuyper; Cornelius Cuyper (ux)
- Same deed as Records 1 + 2. Hendrick = grantee.
- Reference: E-3 (EJ): Folio 178 (SSTSE023)
- ** Catalog significance: Hendrick Cuyper = grantee in this Bergen City conveyance — possibly = p.254 Hendrick Claes Kuyper 1676-1756** at age 38 (= 7 years post-marriage to Jannetje Verkerk). The grantor pair Anna + Cornelius Cuyper (ux) does NOT match Hendrick's parents (= Claes Sr + Annatje Van Vorst, both alive 1714 but Claes Sr d. 1688 = predeceased). So this is NOT a parent-to-son conveyance to p.254; possibly sibling-to-Hendrick or cousin/in-law transaction. Manuscript pull needed to clarify the grantor-Cornelius's relationship to fam.13.
Search 4 of 4: Cowper (Bergen County) — 0 records [verbatim search-result]
No Records Found. = primary-source-confirms Bergen-area Coopers used Cooper/Cuyper/Kuyper spellings exclusively; the Scottish-Lowland Cowper variant was NOT used in Bergen Co.
Catalog synthesis — what 34 Bergen records tell us
1. Daniel-question: NULL across all 4 spelling variants
Across Cooper (14) + Kuyper (16) + Cuyper (4) + Cowper (0) searches, ZERO records name any Daniel-given-name individual in Bergen Co. in the entire 1650-1900s NJSA Early Land Records index. This is a strong NULL finding for pr.63 Hypothesis H1 (= Daniel Sr was Bergen-resident during his 1720-1744 gap). The hypothesis is not falsified outright (= Daniel could have been non-landowner / tenant / juvenile-in-household) but its strongest expected evidence-form is missing.
2. Bergen-Cooper-line activity DID exist in the gap window — but not Daniel
3 records inside the 1720-1744 gap window: - 18 Aug 1721 Cornelius Cooper adjoining-landowner (Hackensack/Saddle River mill conveyance) - 12 May 1722 Cornelius Cooper Witness (Wykhoop/Ramapough deed, Town of Franklin = formerly Saddle River Precinct) - 23 May 1726 Cornelius Cuyper Witness (Romopock 200-ac Magdelen Valleau widow deed)
= Bergen had at least one active Cornelius Cooper/Cuyper individual in the gap window. None are Daniel.
3. The 1714 Bergen City conveyance preserves a Cuyper-Anglicization pivot
The single 12 Jun 1714 Bergen City conveyance E-3 EJ Folio 178 (= Cuyper Records 1, 2, 4) names 3 Cuypers all using Dutch spelling (Anna, Cornelius, Hendrick). The 1721+1722+1726 records 7-12 years later use Cooper-English-spelling (in 2 of 3) and Cuyper-Dutch-spelling (in 1 of 3) for what is likely the same Cornelius. = primary-source documentation of the spelling-transition in this Bergen-Cooper line.
4. Hendericus Kuyper Esq. of Bergen Township 1764-1783 = fam.13 confirmed
Per Kuyper Records 10 + 12 + 13 + 14 (Field Book of General Partition of the Common Lands of Bergen Township, 1764-1765), Hendericus Kuyper Esq. inherited 4 Bergen Common Lots (Nos. 209, 210, 218, 239, 240) through patents originally granted by Petrus Stuyvesant + Philip Carteret to Claes Jansen Van Purmerant (= p.247 Claes Sr, fam.13 PATRIARCH). = primary-source-locks Hendericus Kuyper Esq as a fam.13 lineal descendant of Claes Sr through his Bergen-Township branch. Hendericus is a major Bergen civic figure 1764-1783 (Bergen Commons Trustee, Commissioner, Judge of Common Pleas 1782) — too late to be Daniel Sr's father (b. 1695 = Hendericus active 70+ years later), but candidate fam.13 collateral.
5. Cooper-Stirling network extends to Bergen Saddle River
Per Cooper Record 9 (7 Nov 1794 Saddle River Twp Bergen): John Cooper Chain Bearer on Samuel Seward 32.17-ac Saddle River survey alongside William Earl of Stirling (Owner of adjoining 11 48/100 acres). = post-Stirling's-1783-death Bergen attestation of the Cooper-Stirling spatial overlap pattern already cataloged at K.5 (Daniel Sr 1744 Green Brook Falls × James Alexander = Lord Stirling's father), K.10 Morris Co. Judge, and K.16 Bernards Town 1773.
6. The Hackensack/Saddle River/Ramapo/Romopock geographic cluster
5 Bergen Cooper/Cuyper records cluster in the Hackensack/Saddle River/Ramapo/Romopock corridor (= NW Bergen Co., adjacent to Rockland NY): - 16 Jan 1704: Clyde Johnston Cooper adjoining (Hackensack/Saddle River) - 18 Aug 1721: Cornelius Cooper adjoining (Hackensack/Saddle River) - 12 May 1722: Cornelius Cooper Witness (Wykhoop/Ramapough Town of Franklin) - 23 May 1726: Cornelius Cuyper Witness (Romopock) - 25 Oct 1770 + 1 May 1775: Cornelius Cooper Witness (Saddle River Township) - 1778-1779: Hendricus Kuyper records on Ramapo Patent / Passaic River - 7 Nov 1794: John Cooper Chain Bearer (Saddle River Twp) - 28 Aug 1792: Peter Cooper Chain Bearer (Saddle River Twp)
= NW Bergen Co. / Rockland-corridor was the persistent Cooper-Kuyper-Cuyper geography. This is the same corridor where fam.13's later branches settled (per fam.13 file: Sickeltown / Naringshaw / Haverstraw Rockland Co. NY + spread back to Bergen).
Follow-ups
- Cooper search page 2 CAPTURED 2026-05-28 same day — 4 records added (Stephen Cooper Pompton Twp 1808). NO Daniel surfaces. Bergen NULL confirmed at full 14-of-14 coverage.
- Manuscript pull of the 12 Jun 1714 Bergen City conveyance E-3 EJ Folio 178 — would name the grantor-Cornelius's relationship to grantee-Hendrick (sibling? cousin? father-in-law?). Manuscript body would also document Anna Cuyper's role + any naming-of-parents. NJSA paid order ~$10-25.
- Manuscript pull of the 1721 + 1722 + 1726 Cornelius Cooper/Cuyper Witness records — would confirm whether all 3 are the same person and whether kinship language to Daniel Sr / Grace Runyon / Reziah Runyon appears.
- Expand the Bergen Kuyper search to wildcard Kuyper/Cuyper/Couper — current search did separate Kuyper + Cuyper. A wildcard
*uyperor*uyper*would catch any spelling variants. Worth re-running to confirm completeness. - Bergen tax ratables 1768+ — NJSA SAS00001 (per
reference_nj_archives_tax_ratables_free_pdfs.md) may have Bergen Twp tax records 1768+ that would name Hendericus Kuyper + late-generation Cornelius Cooper. Lower priority since the Daniel-question is the focal one and tax records start too late for the gap window. - fam.13 backbone update — fam.13 file currently catalogs 14 children of Claes Sr; this Bergen sweep surfaces several mid-18th-c. Bergen-resident Kuyper-Coopers (Hendericus Esq + Cornelius 1714-1726+ + Catarina) who may belong to Gen 2 or Gen 3 of fam.13 but aren't yet enumerated in the family file. Worth a fam.13 audit pass once the 4 missing Cooper page-2 records are captured.
