DAR Comments

1) "MOB-DAUGHTER WHO MARRIED CORNELIUS LUDLOW WAS AGNES, NOT CATHERINE."

(MOB = "Member's Own Belief" — = DAR's flag for a recognized correction; reflects an Agnes-not-Catherine identification consistent with A.8 / A.9 Daniel Sr's 1791 will: "John Ludlow the son of my daughter Agnes Ludlow")

Catalog-defining findings

1. DAR's canonical wife #5 name = "BARBARA M. GIBBS"

= NOT "Barbaty-Margaret Gibbs" as Brode 1932 p. 74 renders. DAR's standard form is "Barbara M. Gibbs" with "M." as middle initial — likely Margaret per Brode's expansion. Brode's "Barbaty-" prefix may be (a) an OCR error or transcription idiosyncrasy or (b) Brode's interpretation of dialectical spelling.

p.280 may need rename: catalog standard could shift to "Barbara M. Gibbs" matching DAR's canonical form.

2. DAR's wife #6 = "HANNAH X MARTIN" resolves Brode's "Marbla" mystery

Corrected 2026-09-04 — Brode did NOT write "Marbla". The [I.130] page image (book p. 74) was re-read at 5x and prints "(6) Hannah Martin."; the "Marbla" was a misreading of a page crossed by a reader’s ink annotation. So DAR does not resolve a Brode garble — it independently agrees with Brode, with Littell [I.4], and with this record. What follows still holds, with that one premise corrected: - ~~Brode's "Marbla" = OCR garble OR Brode's own misread~~ — neither: the misreading was the catalog's, in 2026-05-24, and is now fixed at [I.130] - p.1 Marriages table row #6 "Hannah Martin" identification (widow of Col. Ephraim Martin Sr.; m. 6 Jun 1790 per Salem Gazette) is CORRECT - p.281 Hannah Martin Cooper should be renamed/merged to Hannah Martin

3. DAR adopts Agnes-not-Catherine correction for Cornelius Ludlow's wife

The comment "MOB-DAUGHTER WHO MARRIED CORNELIUS LUDLOW WAS AGNES, NOT CATHERINE" is significant for catalog interpretation. Same thesis as: - A.8 / A.9 Daniel Sr's 1791 will — "John Ludlow the son of my daughter Agnes Ludlow" - L.4 Thomas Cooper marginal note — "the branch 'John Ludlow' should spring from Agnes Cooper instead of Catharine Cooper"

= DAR has officially adopted this correction; catalog's p.51 "Catherine (Cooper) Ludlow" identification may need restructure as "Agnes (Cooper) Ludlow". Brode 1932 I.130 maintained Catherine — = Brode was wrong on TWO Catherine/Conover issues, only one of which she caught in her own book.

4. Brode's NN 122972 descended through "DANIEL [1] X CONOVER"

Brode's 1931 DAR Supplemental Paper traced descent through Daniel Cooper Jr × Miss Conover (NOT through Catherine Cooper × Cornelius Ludlow as the catalog's I.130 transcription of the embedded chain text might suggest).

Wait — re-read I.130 DAR chain transcription on book pp. 76-77: chain goes Brode ← Bigham ← Ross ← Lydia Ludlow ← John Ludlow ← Catherine Cooper (= "he the son of Col. Cornelius Ludlow… m. Catherine Cooper… dau. of Daniel Cooper"). So Brode's chain in the BOOK goes through Catherine Cooper Sr × Cornelius Ludlow.

But DAR record says NN 122972 descended through DANIEL × CONOVER = Daniel Cooper Jr × his first wife. These are two different lineage paths.

Reconciliation: Brode's NN 122972 may have descended through BOTH Catherine Cooper Sr (via Cornelius Ludlow → John Ludlow → Lydia Ludlow…) AND Daniel Cooper Jr (via Catherine Cooper Jr × John Ludlow — same John Ludlow who married Catherine Sr's husband's son). The DAR record may only display ONE of the two pathways. Brode's actual descent chain goes through John Ludlow's marriage to his cousin Catherine Cooper Jr (= daughter of Daniel Jr × Catherine Hankinson/Conover) — = the "Catherine Cooper" in Brode's chain on book p. 70 (= "John Ludlow b. Dec. 14, 1752, d. March 26, 1823, m. Oct. 19, 1772, Catherine Cooper.") is Catherine Cooper JR, NOT Catherine Cooper Sr.

= Brode descended via Daniel Cooper Jr through her ancestor John Ludlow's 1st wife Catherine Cooper Jr (= Daniel Jr × Catherine Hankinson's only Hankinson-line child). The DAR record's "DANIEL [1] X CONOVER" identifies Daniel Jr's first wife as the (then-believed) Conover (= corrected by A.E. Cooper 1898 to Hankinson). Brode caught the correction in her 1932 book at p. 77.

5. Daniel Sr DAR profile does NOT publish Barbara Gibbs's birth/death dates

= the b. 1738 / d. 1789 datum in Brode 1932 p. 74 is NOT in the DAR ancestor public record. None of the 5 listed descendant applications descend through Wife #5 Barbara Gibbs (= she had no children with Daniel Sr per Brode + catalog).

Implication for Barbara Gibbs trace: NN 122972 (Brode's own supplemental) remains the most direct path to her source citation. The application would itemize Brode's evidence for every named ancestor including the wives. Available via DAR Record Copy Request.

Follow-up

RE-RATED 2026-07-15 — read this before acting on #1/#2/#6 below. Two things learned since these were written (May 2026): 1. A DAR application's lineage TERMINATES AT THE PATRIOT. Proven at [M.47]/NN 80509, whose lineage stopped dead at Michael Van Court. Daniel Sr is the patriot here (A025711) ⇒ no application on this record can ever name Daniel Sr's father. The pr.2 headline question is structurally unreachable via DAR record copies. (The [M.44] counter-example — a closing "child of:" line naming the patriot's parents — is an optional applicant addition, not a form feature; it cannot be relied on.) 2. The GRS lineage preview is FREE and shows the transcribed lineage outright. ⇒ Preview before buying — always. These items were priced at "~$10–25, ~6 weeks"; the real route is $10 instant online ($15 by form), and the preview costs nothing. The "pre-July-2026 window" urgency is also void: the Library Restoration Project affects the physical library, not the online download.

Re-rating under the 2026-07-06 priority tiers: ~~×6~~ → LOW. #1's stated purpose is Barbara Gibbs's source citation — but Gibbs was Daniel Sr's childless 5th wife, married 1788 when he was ~93 ([J.152]); she can speak to neither his parentage nor Benjamin's line, so she advances no main goal. #2/#6's purpose (Catherine-vs-Agnes) is already settled by a better source we hold: Daniel Sr's own 1791 will ([A.8]/[A.9]) says "John Ludlow the son of my daughter Agnes Ludlow" — a primary source that outranks any DAR paper — with [L.4]'s marginal note and DAR's own MOB flag concurring; and [pr.91]'s GMNJ Vol 18 order is already in flight to settle it with John Ludlow's ~1752 baptism. ⇒ Preview them free if curious; don't pay. (If any is ever bought, NN 669245 is the only one with an "S" flag ⇒ the only one with purchasable Supporting Documentation, $20 — revisit only if [pr.91]'s GMNJ arrives null.) The genuinely valuable item on this list is #3, and it is FREE — see below.

  1. ~~~~ LOW — Request DAR Record Copy of NN 122972 (= Brode's 1931 supplemental). (Purpose = Barbara Gibbs's source citation; re-rated LOW per the box above — childless 5th wife, no goal impact. Brode's descent chain shows free in the lineage preview anyway. ~~Pre-July-2026 timing critical~~ = void; ~~$10-25 / ~6 weeks~~ = actually $10 instant online.)
  2. ~~~~ LOW — Request DAR Record Copy of NN 32455 (= V245 same-vol-as-Brode; oldest Cornelius-Ludlow-line application; may have been the SOURCE that Brode's family relied on for Catherine identification before the Agnes correction). (Re-rated LOW: the Agnes correction is already primary-source-settled by [A.8]/[A.9]; knowing which pre-correction paper misled Brode is history-of-the-error, not evidence. Preview free.)
  3. Catalog restructure for p.51 Catherine Cooper Ludlow → Agnes Cooper Ludlow per DAR + A.8 + L.4 convergent attestation; this is a major identification issue affecting pr.51 + p.51 itself + multiple Ludlow-side descendants
  4. Rename p.281 Hannah Martin Cooper → Hannah Martin Cooper per DAR canonical
  5. Update p.280 title to "Barbara M. Gibbs Cooper" per DAR canonical
  6. Consider requesting DAR copies of NN 149788, 149787, 669245 if budget allows (= all Cornelius-Ludlow-line descendants; would corroborate or contradict Brode's data)
