Searched for: HIS DEATH RECORD AND HIS 1900 CENSUS - THE FIRST SEARCHES EVER RUN FOR HIM; the file was created the previous day withsearches: []. (The word DEATH is in this query line on purpose:build_missing_records.pymatches a search row to a gap by the words in the QUERY, so a death-record gap stays flagged "no search recorded" unless the query says so.) SIGNED IN. Two angles. (a) THE 1900 CENSUS (coll. 7602) for a KANSAS-BORN Charles Cooper: given name Charles, surname Cooper, birth 1879 +/-2 in KANSAS, any place - 110 ranked rows, page 1 read (50). Kansas birth is the discriminator, because it is the one thing [D.663] establishes about him that his Texas-born brothers do not share. (b) A CANDIDATE RUN TO GROUND IN NAVARRO COUNTY - see the result.Result: (a) NULL. Exactly ONE Kansas-born Charles Cooper of the right age appears on page 1: "Chs Cooper", b. May 1879 Kansas, a LABORER at Pawnee Twp, Smith Co., KANSAS, in no family of his own. Smith Co. is in the far north of the state, 200 miles from Walnut Twp, Butler Co., and nothing but the birth year and state connects him. RECORDED AS A CANDIDATE, NOT IDENTIFIED. No Kansas-born Charles Cooper of this age is indexed anywhere in TEXAS in 1900, which is where his parents and four brothers were [D.273]. (b) A STRIKING CANDIDATE, OPENED AND EXCLUDED. The 1950 census place-list for Navarro Co., Texas - the county where this family ended up (Sarah Harriett (Starr) Cooper and James Henry Cooper both died at Corsicana) - holds a "CHARLES E COOPER", b. abt 1878 TEXAS, head, with wife Lilly, at Kerr St., Blooming Grove. Right name, right decade, right county. HIS TEXAS DEATH CERTIFICATE SETTLES IT: Charles Edward Cooper, b. 5 Jan 1878 at KOSSIE, TEXAS, d. 22 Dec 1956 at Austin, FATHER "PINK COOPER", MOTHER "NANCY JOHNSON". A different family entirely. His WWI draft card (b. 5 Jan 1878, Ellis Co., wife Lellie Belle) and a Find a Grave memorial belong to the same man. ⇒ NOT OURS, and recorded here in full so that the next person who meets a Charles E. Cooper in Navarro County does not spend the afternoon on him. Note also that a 5 Jan 1878 birth would have made him TWO on 11 June 1880, not one. ANCESTRY'S SUGGESTED-RECORDS PANEL CONFLATES AT LEAST TWO MEN HERE: the 1880 census it suggests for the Blooming Grove Charles E. is "Chas. Cooper", 3, of GALVESTON, son of Chas. Cooper (b. Illinois) and Mary (b. New York) - who is Charles SALTER Cooper, a third man again. A reminder that the panel is a lead list, not an identification. STILL UNSEARCHED FOR HIS DEATH: the 1880-1900 Texas and Kansas mortality schedules and death indexes for a child or young man of this name; and for his life, the 1885 Kansas state census (though the family's own children's birthplaces - Texas 1874, Texas 1875, Kansas 1879, Texas 1885 - suggest they were back in Texas by then, so Kansas 1885 is a low-probability search) and the FamilySearch tree. - Burial not yet found.
