Index columns: FAMILY | GIVEN NAMES | GRANTEES | Vol./Page | Date | LOCATION. ("al" = et al; "ux" = et uxor/wife; "By Comr" = by commissioner; "Est" = estate; "Trus" = trustee.)
READ THIS BEFORE USING THE LOCATION COLUMN — IT GIVES THE LAND'S TOWNSHIP, NOT THE GRANTOR'S RESIDENCE
Three instruments off this index have now been pulled and read, and every one of them contradicts the residence reading:
| row | LOCATION column says | the deed itself says the grantor is |
|---|---|---|
Amy + Wm (ux) → Samuel King, 11/67, 1833 → [K.107] |
Mansfield | "of the Township of KINGWOOD in the County of HUNTERDON" |
Benjn + Sophia (ux) → John W. Smith, 9/234, 1831 → [K.111] |
Greenwich | "of the township of Greenwich" — agrees, by coincidence |
John + Mary E → David J. Beers, 9/455, 1832 → [K.112] |
Greenwich | "John Cooper of EASTON, PENNSYLVANIA" |
The cost, when it was read wrongly: a same-day claim that a Mansfield widower had
remarried a woman named Amy — built entirely on row 11/67's Mansfield — which had to
be withdrawn within the hour. ⇒ See [p.2090].
And note the middle row. It agrees, which is exactly why the error is durable: the
column often DOES match, because people commonly sold land in their own township. One agreement
proves nothing.
⇒ NEVER write a residence into a person file from this column. Use it to locate the LAND, and pull the deed for the residence.
The same caution applies to [K.54], the grantee index, which has the same column.

Notes (identifications only; the parentage conclusions live in [p.112]/[pr.17])
- Bk 9 p.241 = the Samuel + Sarah Cooper ↔ Israel Cooper conveyance (Independence, 14 Nov 1831) — a Cooper-to-Cooper deed; the highest-value pull.
Cross-references
- p.112 / pr.17 — analysis: our core cluster absent as grantors.
- C.28 — Robert M [p.165] × Phebe Schenck; [D.4]/[D.40]/[D.469] — the Independence census cluster.
Follow-ups
- Warren Deed Book 9 p.241 pulled + read → full verbatim in K.55 (Samuel Cooper & Sally/Sarah his wife of Independence → Israel Cooper, $100, land adjoining Thomas Parker; exec. 2 May 1831 / rec. 14 Nov 1831).
- GRANTEE index done → K.54 (DGS 007896859). Result: Joseph/Robert also absent as buyers; but a live John Cooper buys in Independence 1860 (Bk 50 pp.201/203) — new lead.
2026-09-08 — the Israel rows now attach to a person file
[p.2052] Israel Cooper was created 2026-09-07 (named as [p.113] John of Independence's father in [F.278]). Two rows above are his, or a same-named kinsman's:
Samuel (ux) / Sarah -> Israel Cooper, 9/241, 14 Nov 1831, Independence — read verbatim at [K.55]; grantor = [p.115], a six-brother-hypothesis member.
Israel -> Robert C. Shaw, 12/577, 3 Mar 1835, Independence — PULLED 2026-09-09 → [K.84]. This index date is the RECORDING date; the deed was executed 23 Jan 1835. He conveyed ALONE — no wife, no dower release — and signed his own name.
Identity between these rows and [K.83]'s 1802 Israel is an open question — argued at [p.2052], not here.
2026-09-28 — THE TWO MANSFIELD ROWS ARE NOW THE LIVE LEAD
This entry was read on 2026-07-09 to answer a DIFFERENT question — whether the Independence cluster ([p.112] Joseph / [p.113] John / [p.114] Robert) appears as sellers. Its title still records that result. Two rows that meant nothing then are now the most valuable unpulled records in the [name.657] Elizabeth (Cooper) Deats thread, because [p.1746], [K.73] and [D.638] have since put a Cooper family in Mansfield Twp:
Nancy + Wm (ux) -> George Mitchell, Bk 8 p. 19, rec. 11 Jun 1830, MANSFIELD
** PULLED 2026-09-28 → [K.106].
THIS ROW'S DATE DISAGREES WITH THE DEED BOOK, AND THIS ENTRY IS NOT AT FAULT.
The deed book reads "Received and Recorded 1st June 1830"; this index reads
"June 11 1830". A same-day claim that this row had MISREAD 1 Jun as
11 Jun is WITHDRAWN — FamilySearch's own full-text OCR of image 387
independently returns June 11 1830, so this entry transcribed its source correctly and
the two records simply differ. Which is right is unresolved; nothing turns on
it, since the fact that matters is the EXECUTION date, 25 Sep 1828, which only the
instrument gives. It was EXECUTED 25 September 1828, twenty months before recording, which is
what reconciles it with [D.638]. It does NOT recite a chain of title, so it does not link
the grantor to [p.1746]. The grantor now has a person file: [p.2090]; his wife, [p.2091].
This is the first row of this index checked against its own instrument, and it was off by ten
days — further reason to re-crop book p. 107 at 5x before citing any other figure here.
Amy + Wm (ux) -> Samuel King, Bk 11 p. 67, rec. 13 May 1833, MANSFIELD
** PULLED 2026-09-28 → [K.107]. THIS GRANTOR IS NOT THE MANSFIELD WILLIAM.
The deed's parties are "William Cooper and Amy his wife of the Township of KINGWOOD in
the County of HUNTERDON" — i.e. [p.12] William Cooper of Kingwood, whose wife Amy is
[p.1927]. The LOCATION column of this index gives the LAND's township, not the grantor's
residence, and reading it as a residence is what produced a same-day claim that a Mansfield
widower had remarried an Amy. That claim is withdrawn — see [p.2090].
The date is right here: the deed reads "Received and recorded May 13th 1833", matching
this row exactly. So the Bk 8 p. 19 disagreement is a one-off, not a systematic offset.
And the deed is substantial: ~150 acres in Mansfield for $1,900 — a Warren County
farm for the Kingwood William, which [pr.17] did not have.
[K.73] (1814) names the heirs of a deceased William Cooper of Mansfield as John D., Martha, and "Wm Cooper and NANCY Cooper his wife". Row 1 is the same distinctive given-name pair conveying in the same township sixteen years later, in a township [D.638] shows held exactly one Cooper household.
And [K.54], the GRANTEE index, holds NO Mansfield Cooper at all, 1830-1911 ⇒ the Mansfield Coopers only ever sold, and leave the Warren deed index entirely after 1833 — two years before Elizabeth married in that township.
What a pull would decide. This family's deeds recite their chain of title, because their father's own 1802 purchase was never recorded ([K.26]). ⇒ Bk 8 p. 19 may state whether this Wm holds by descent from the decedent of [K.73] — the identification [p.1746] and [name.3] have both carried as untested — and a partition or heirs-deed is the one record class that routinely names married daughters with their husbands.
It also dates Nancy. ux means a wife joined, which a dower release requires, so she was
living at EXECUTION — a date this index does not give. These are RECORDING dates;
the lag is measured twice in this very index at 39 days ([K.84]) and 6.5 months ([K.55]).
[D.638] shows no adult woman in the house on 1 June 1830; an execution date in
1829 or early 1830 reconciles that, a later one does not.
NOT YET VERIFIED AT MAGNIFICATION. This entry records no read_zoom,
so the given names, volume/page figures and dates in both rows are whole-page-grade readings.
Re-crop book p. 107 (DGS 007903161, img 387) at 5x before either figure is cited —
[A.126]'s demonstrated 2463U-for-3463U misprint is the standing reminder that an index number is a
pointer, not a citation.
