[K.84] t1 asked: did [name.546] Robert C. Shaw also acquire Israel Cooper Israel Cooper's TWENTY-FIVE ACRE tract ([K.83], 1802)? — because the deed by which he got it would name whoever held it after Israel, and no estate exists ([A.126], [A.141], [A.168]). NO. He did not. His ENTIRE grantee record is four entries — 12/72, 12/577, 12/580 and 15/398 — and only the first three are Independence Township. After 1837 the Shaw block carries no Robert C. Shaw at all; it passes to Job J, Caroline, Philip B and others. ⇒ Robert C. Shaw bought the half acre and the adjoining Sharp parcel. He never took the 25 acres. The lead is closed, and closed cleanly — this is a whole-block reading, not a sample.

In this index "Release" in the LOCATION column means the instrument conveys no tract — it releases a claim. ⇒ A release taken by the same buyer, on the same day, three pages from the Cooper purchase, is most naturally a release of some claim ON THAT PARCEL. WHO SARAH KARR IS, IS NOT KNOWN AND IS NOT GUESSED HERE. Do not assume she is Israel's widow, daughter or heir — a release can equally discharge a mortgage, a judgment or a prior owner's dower. The document has not been read. PULL WARREN DEEDS Bk 12 p. 580. If it is a dower or heirship release it names a woman with an interest in Israel Cooper Israel Cooper's land — which is the closest thing to a relative this man has ever had.

That purchase is now located: Jacob T Sharp ux → Robert C Shaw, Bk 12 p. 72, rec. 22 April 1834, Independence Twp. NOTE THE GIVEN-NAME DISCREPANCY: this index reads Jacob **T** Sharp; [K.84]'s deed text was read as Jacob **F** Sharp. Not resolved — both readings are recorded, and the deed at 12/72 would settle it. See [name.547].

🔑 how this index is arranged read it before using any warren index

This is a PATENTED KEY-LETTER INDEX (Pat. Jan 7 1903; Oct 29 1907), not an alphabetical one, and using it alphabetically fails. The volume's own printed directory (image 16) states the rule: ⇒ "…placed in columns according to the letters L—M—N—R—T, in the order in which they appear in the first word of the name… Names whose first word does not contain any of the said letters are placed in the Miscellaneous column." So within the "S" volume the sections run L, M, N, R, T, then MISCELLANEOUS, and within a section the surnames are NOT alphabetical at all (the T section runs Stiger → Strouse → Stitzer). SHAW contains no L, M, N, R or T ⇒ it is in MISCELLANEOUS, which is why alphabetical probing between "Sell" and "Slack" could never find it.
