Why this entry exists

M.23 covers the Cooper + Coriell entries on pp. 188-189 of Vol V 1916 — the Honeyman Earliest American Ancestors of Somerset Families article specifically for those two surnames. The full-volume OCR sweep surfaces substantial Daniel-Sr-line content elsewhere in the same volume that was not visible at the pp 188-189 excerpt level:

  1. Gaston Family Lines of Somerset multi-installment article = primary-source-published genealogy of the Gaston family (Daniel Sr's daughter Rosanna Gaston's family). Surfaces NEW birth + death + marriage dates for Rosanna Cooper Gaston, plus 8+ Gaston-Cooper grandchildren of Daniel Sr.

  2. Wyckoff Notes by William F. Wyckoff = naming pattern reveals Theodosia Cooper × Jacob Wyckoff as a previously-unknown Cooper family member with Daniel-Sr-line naming-tradition ties.

  3. Kirkpatrick Family Lines = identifies a Sarah Cooper as daughter of Daniel Cooper of Long Hill via cross-reference to Honeyman's M.24 editorial — NEW potential Daniel-Sr-line daughter or granddaughter.

  4. Honeyman article extensions including 5-generation Coriell descent chain.

The catalog had this volume already cataloged at M.23 for the highest-priority pp 188-189 content; M.31 adds the rest of the volume's Daniel-Sr-line-relevant material that the OCR pipeline now makes accessible.

Verbatim — Robert Gaston (#40) × Rosanna Cooper marriage and family (Gaston Family Lines, ~p. 41-43)

40. ROBERT, b. Jan. 23, 1732; d. in Tor-bet (now Delaware) twsp., Northumberland co., Pa., Sept. 2, 1793, and was buried in Warrior Run graveyard; m., May 15, 1762, Rosanna Cooper (dau. of Daniel Cooper, the famous centenarian of Long Hill, N. J., and probably Grace Runyon, the first of Daniel's six wives), who was b. Mar. 23, 1742, and d. Jan. 14, 1817.

Robert resided in Bemards twsp., Somerset Co., N. J., until about 1770; then in Pequannock twsp., Morris co., until 1778; then in Bedminster twsp., Somerset Co., until about July, 1792, when he removed to Northumberland co., Pa. While in Morris co., in May, 1776, he was the first man to sign the articles of association of many citizens of that county to sustain the Continental Congress ("N. J. Archives," First Series, Vol. X, p. 717). On May 15, 1777, he was appointed Lieutenant-Colonel in the Western Battalion, Morris co. militia, but subsequently (date not given) resigned. ("N. J. Archives," Second Series, Vol. I, p. 290; Stryker's "Officers and Men," p. 358). On Oct. 15, 1777, he purchased ten acres of land in the township of Mendham, Morris co., but the next year removed to Bedminster twsp., Somerset Co., and resided on a place of about 20 acres (which embraced what is now known as Schomp's Mills), adjoining the "Old Stone House farm" of Johannes Moelick. In 1782 he was Justice of the Peace; from 1782-'84 he was clerk of the Board of Chosen Freeholders of Somerset. During the same period, in 1783, he was appointed a Lay Judge of the Somerset Courts. In 1787 he was assessed on 20 acres in Bedminster twsp. In the October Term, 1791, he again appears on the records as Lay Judge, but not after the June Term, 1792. During that year he sold the Bedminster place mentioned, and also 37 acres of land in Bemards twsp., to Nicholas Arrowsmith (as per Somerset Deeds), and removed to Northumberland co., Pa., where his son, Joseph, was located, and there died. He was a Free Mason, as appears by the Bedminster Lodge books.

CHILDREN OF ROBERT GASTON (40) AND ROSANNA COOPER:

  1. GRACE, b. Nov. 25, 1764; d. Mar. 14, 1838; m., Hugh Gaston, who finally settled in Ohio.

[Additional children #53-#59 in subsequent installments of the Gaston Family Lines article]

Catalog implications — Rosanna Cooper Gaston

The Gaston Family Lines genealogy article unlocks 3 NEW primary-source-published dates for Daniel Sr's daughter Rosanna:

Combined with M.24 cemetery-roll Cooper data, the Daniel Sr daughter-cohort dates are now substantially primary-source-published:

Daniel Sr daughter (per A.9) Birth Death Spouse
Agness Ludlow (dec'd by 1791) unknown <1791 _ Ludlow
Rosanna Gaston 23 Mar 1742 [M.31] 14 Jan 1817 [M.31] Robert Gaston m. 15 May 1762 [M.31]
Providence Manning unknown unknown _ Manning
Anna Carle unknown unknown _ Carle

Rosanna Cooper Gaston is now the ONLY Daniel-Sr-daughter with primary-source-published full BMD data — first such complete attestation in the catalog.

Catalog implications — Robert Gaston Rev. War service

Robert Gaston's Rev War service: - 15 May 1777: appointed Lt-Col in Western Battalion, Morris co. militia (NJ Archives 2nd Ser. Vol I p. 290 + Stryker p. 358) - May 1776: first signer of Continental Congress support articles in Morris Co. (NJ Archives 1st Ser. Vol X p. 717)

This places Daniel Sr's son-in-law as a Morris Co. Rev War officer — important context for Daniel Sr's family network during the Revolution. Daniel Sr himself was militia commissioner per B.33 1778; his son Capt. Benjamin Cooper (per I.37 Stryker 1872) — = a Cooper-Gaston military-officer-network at Morris Co. during the war.

Verbatim — Theodosia Cooper × Jacob Wyckoff (Wyckoff Notes, ~p. 209)

(730) Jacob Wyckoff, b. 1775; d. Sept. 10, 1849; m. Theodosia Cooper, who was b. 1776, and d. Apr. 29, 1839. He removed to New York, and lived for a time in Brooklyn. He was buried in Cypress Hills Cemetery. Children:

  1. Gitty, b. Sept. 27, 1795; d. Jan. 28, 1885; m. (1) Cornelius Stephenson; (2), Dec. 9, 1814, James Cross.

  2. Elizabeth C., b. Apr. 1, 1799; d. June 27, 1884; m., Oct. 6, 1827, Zetus Searle, who was b. Mar. 13, 1799, and d. May 12, 1880.

  3. Jacob Harvey.

  4. Harriet, b. Dec. 2, 1804; d. Apr. 19, 1828; m., Nov. 2, 1825, Abraham Van Horn.

  5. Simon

  6. Fanny C., b. Dec. 11, 1808; m. Charles Daniel.

  7. Jane, b. Aug. 20, 1811; m. Cornelius Clark.

  8. Eleanor C., b. Mar. 18, 1813; m. (1) Mott Cannon; (2) Stephen Childs.

  9. Amos Dayton [Wyckoff].

  10. Israel Ludlow [Wyckoff].

  11. Melvina T., b. Sept. 8, 1820; m. Edward Thomas.

Catalog implications — Theodosia Cooper Wyckoff

Theodosia Cooper b. 1776, d. 29 Apr 1839 = NEW catalog person. Birth year 1776 places her in the Daniel Sr grandchildren cohort (Daniel Sr's grandchildren born 1770s-1790s).

Decisive naming-pattern evidence for Daniel-Sr-line ties: - Son #979 named "Amos Dayton" Wyckoff = named after Amos Dayton (Caty Cooper's husband per M.28 Caty × Amos m. 19 Feb 1812; Caty = Benjamin Cooper's daughter per I.4 + I.22). The naming after Caty's husband strongly suggests Theodosia is Caty's first cousin or close relative — i.e., Benjamin's niece, Daniel Sr's granddaughter via one of his other children. - Son #980 named "Israel Ludlow" Wyckoff = named after Israel Ludlow, presumably a male relative of Daniel Sr's daughter Agness Ludlow (per A.9 Agness Ludlow dec'd by 1791). If Agness Ludlow's husband / brother / son was named Israel Ludlow, then Theodosia naming her son Israel Ludlow Wyckoff = honoring her aunt's family line.

The combined naming pattern (Amos Dayton + Israel Ludlow as two of Theodosia's sons) gives dual-aunt naming evidence that Theodosia's mother was Daniel Sr's daughter or daughter-in-law, with Caty Cooper Dayton + Agness Ludlow as her aunts — placing Theodosia as Daniel Sr's granddaughter via one of Benjamin's siblings (most plausibly Benjamin Cooper's brother Daniel Jr / John / George / Peter who would have had children born ~1770s).

Open follow-up: identify Theodosia Cooper's parents. Most parsimonious candidates: - Daughter of George Cooper × Margaret Lefferty (per I.23 Craddock + M.24 cemetery roll): George had documented daughters Mary (d. 1794 age 16) + possibly more. Theodosia b. 1776 = age 17 at George's death 1801 — consistent with George × Margaret being her parents. - Daughter of Peter Cooper (per M.24 cemetery roll Peter d. 1847 age 86 = b. ~1761): Peter would have been 15 at Theodosia's 1776 birth = unlikely as parent. - Daughter of Daniel Jr × Ann Cross: per A.10 Daniel Jr d. 1787; if his wife Ann Cross had a daughter Theodosia b. 1776, would have been ~11 at father's death — possible but unconfirmed. - Daughter of Benjamin Cooper × first wife: Benjamin's documented daughters per I.22 Craddock are Polly (b. 1780) + Caty (b. 1783) + Charity (b. ~1790) + Mary's-infant-half-brother — Theodosia b. 1776 would precede Polly by 4 years, making her a possible older sister to Polly = NEW Benjamin daughter candidate. Per Craddock Benjamin's 2nd wife (between Charity Hoff and Mary _____) is unknown name; Theodosia could be that 2nd wife's daughter.

Very high-priority follow-up: pull Wyckoff Family records + Cypress Hills Cemetery records + Brooklyn marriage records ~1794-1795 (Jacob Wyckoff × Theodosia Cooper marriage date) to verify Theodosia's parentage.

Verbatim — David Kirkpatrick × Sarah Cooper (Kirkpatrick Family Lines, ~p. 270+)

(a) David Kirkpatrick, b. Dec. 24, 1776; m. Sarah Cooper (dau. of Daniel Cooper, of Long Hill, Morris co., as to whom see QUARTERLY, Vol. I, p. 155).

(Within the larger Kirkpatrick Family Lines article, in a sub-section listing children of Alexander Kirkpatrick (b. 3 Sept 1751, d. 24 Sept 1827) × Sarah Carle (dau. of Judge John Carle of Long Hill Morris co.).)

Catalog implications — Sarah Cooper of Long Hill

The cross-reference "see QUARTERLY, Vol. I, p. 155" = explicit Honeyman 1916 cross-reference to Vol I 1912 p. 155 (= M.24 "Husband of Six Wives and a Centenarian" article specifically about Daniel Cooper Sr (1695-1795)). Honeyman 1916 is identifying Sarah Cooper's father as the Daniel Cooper at Long Hill = Daniel Sr OR a close family member at Long Hill.

Sarah Cooper does NOT appear in: - A.9 Daniel Sr's 1791 will (which names 4 daughters: Agness Ludlow dec'd, Rosanna Gaston, Providence Manning, Anna Carle) - I.4 Littell's 7-children list (Catherine, Daniel Jr, John, Benjamin, Agness, Rosanna, Anna) - I.23 Craddock's 10-children list (Catherine 1727, Daniel Jr, John, Benjamin, Agness, Rosanna, Anna, Providence, Peter 1735, George 1745, Anne 1750)

Three plausible explanations:

  1. Honeyman 1916 was loose with "of Long Hill" — Sarah Cooper may be a granddaughter of Daniel Sr (= daughter of one of his sons, all of whom resided at or near Long Hill). The "see QUARTERLY, Vol. I, p. 155" cross-reference may be intended to identify the geographic + family-network context generally, not Sarah's father specifically.

  2. Sarah was a 5th daughter of Daniel Sr not previously catalog-documented. Possible if she predeceased the 1791 will-writing OR was elsewhere when I.4 Littell + I.23 Craddock compiled their lists.

  3. Sarah was a granddaughter via one of Daniel Sr's sons. David Kirkpatrick b. 24 Dec 1776 + Sarah likely born ~1776-1785 (= contemporary marriage age) = grandchild generation. Father candidates: Daniel Jr, John, Benjamin, Peter, George.

HIGH-PRIORITY follow-up: pull David Kirkpatrick × Sarah Cooper marriage record + Sarah's birth/death dates + her father's identity. Likely available via Somerset Co. NJ Wills (Alexander Kirkpatrick's 1826 will Book C p. 315 = referenced in Vol V 1916) + Kirkpatrick family genealogies. Resolution will determine whether Sarah is Daniel Sr's 5th-daughter candidate OR a grandchild.

Verbatim — Honeyman 5-generation Coriell descent chain (Earliest American Ancestors article, p. 189)

CORIELL.—Elias, Emanuel (or John Emanuel) and David Coriell, perhaps with another brother, Abraham, emigrated from the island of Corsica in 1663, and were French. Emanuel went to Lambertville, and operated the ferry there in 1733. David owned land at Dunellen, N. J., and left a son David (this is the David as I understand it, b. 1735; d. 1779, who was the father of Abraham (1738-1828), who was the father of Richard (1775-1838), who was the father of Abner S., of New Market (1820-1905), who was the father of Mr. A. S. Coriell, of Bound Brook); also Moses, Abraham and Elisha.

Catalog implications — Coriell descent chain

Honeyman's 1916 descent chain provides a 5-generation Coriell line specific to David Coriell of Dunellen NJ:

Generation Person Dates
Gen 0 (immigrant) David Coriell (sr) of Corsica 1663 unknown
Gen 1 David (b. 1735, d. 1779) 1735-1779
Gen 2 Abraham 1738-1828
Gen 3 Richard 1775-1838
Gen 4 Abner S. of New Market 1820-1905
Gen 5 A. S. Coriell of Bound Brook alive 1916-1917

Sets A. S. Coriell of Bound Brook (named in M.29 Vol VI 1917 editor's note re: house burned 1839) within his ancestral chain.

Honeyman gives Gen-1's brothers' names: Moses Coriell + Abraham Coriell + Elisha Coriell as siblings of David (Gen 1).

This expands the M.23 Honeyman pp 188-189 Coriell content to include the David-Coriell-of-Dunellen line specifically.

Per project pr.16 Cooper-Coriell Y-DNA mystery.md Theory 5, the Coriell-Cooper-Y-DNA-mystery investigation requires identifying the Y-DNA Coriell line carrier(s). A. S. Coriell of Bound Brook (alive 1916-1917) = potential Y-DNA reference.

Verbatim — Honeyman two-Cooper-lines distinction (p. 188-189)

COOPER.—John Cooper came from Olney, England, in ship "Hopewell," in 1635; settled at Southampton, L. I. Daniel Cooper (probably not related) was said to have been b. at sea while parents were coming from England in 1699; had six wives and ten children (see QUARTERLY, Vol. I, p. 155). He was sheriff of Morris co., and d. aged 100; was buried at Basking Ridge. Both of these Coopers have descendants in Somerset.

Catalog implications — two-Cooper-lines distinction

Honeyman's 1916 article explicitly distinguishes two distinct Cooper lines with Somerset descendants:

  1. John Cooper of Olney England 1635 → Southampton LI line = Long Island English-colonial Cooper kindred per project pr.27 LI English-colonial Cooper kindred (RESOLVED).md. NOT Daniel Sr's line.

  2. Daniel Cooper born-at-sea 1699 → Long Hill / Morris Co. → Basking Ridge = Daniel Sr (Chris Cooper's documented Y-line ancestor per memory user_chris_cooper_ancestry.md).

Honeyman's "probably not related" qualifier = explicit distinction. This confirms the catalog's existing separation of Long Island Cooper kindred (out of scope per project pr.27 LI English-colonial Cooper kindred (RESOLVED).md) vs Daniel Sr's Long Hill line.
