Verbatim — application form

Heading (page 3)

"I, Lotta Ludlow Tyler, being of the age of eighteen years and upwards, hereby apply for membership in this Society by right of lineal descent in the following line from Cornelius Ludlow and Daniel Cooper who was born in New Providence N.J. on the ___ day of ___, 1728 and died in Long Hill, N.J. near Gillette Station Morris Co. on the 27th day of April, 1812"

Lineage chain (= Ludlow side, NOT Cooper-biological)

  1. Cornelius Ludlow (b. 1728 New Providence NJ; d. 27 Apr 1812 Long Hill, near Gillette Station, Morris Co. NJ) × Catherine Cooper (first wife) ← (= old Catherine identification; per DAR M.37 MOB note now Agnes)
  2. John Ludlow × Susan De Mun (= John's 2nd wife, NOT his 1st wife Catherine Cooper Jr!)
  3. William Ludlow × Charlotte Hand
  4. Israel Ludlow × Eliza McMillan
  5. James Bennet Ludlow × Harriet Merryweather
  6. Lotta Ludlow Tyler of Muncie, Indiana

CRITICAL: Tyler's biological descent goes through Susan De Mun (John Ludlow's 2nd wife) at generation 2 — she is NOT a biological Cooper-line descendant. Her DAR claim to Daniel Cooper Sr ancestry is via the great-great-great-grandfather Cornelius Ludlow's first wife identified (in 1890s) as Catherine Cooper. Per current DAR understanding (M.37 MOB), that first wife was Agnes Cooper, not Catherine. So even Tyler's claim-by-marriage to Daniel Cooper Sr stands or falls on which daughter married Cornelius.

Ancestor's services (page 4)

"Colonel Cornelius Ludlow was commissioned Major of Eastern Battalion, Morris Co. New Jersey Militia Jan. 13th 1776. Major of Col. Martin's Battalion Hearde Brigade June 14th 1776. Resigned Nov. 13th 1777 Disability. Copied from New Jersey Records.

Daniel Cooper - Nominated Justice of the Quorum Sept. 1st 1739. Renominated " " " " March 28th 1749. Nominated Judge County of Morris N.J. Mch 19th 1759. Renominated " " " " April 2nd 1768. Justice and Judge for over 40 yrs. under the Colonial Government.

Daniel Cooper was born near New York City May 1st 1695 died in Passaic Valley (near present site of Millington New Jersey) on May 2nd 1795. Married Grace Runyon, their tombstones are in Basking Ridge Churchyard at Basking Ridge, New Jersey. From New Jersey Archives."

NEW data: "March 19, 1759 Judge Morris Co." nomination (= Brode 1923 has "March 28, 1759"; Tyler 1890s has "March 19, 1759" — minor date discrepancy worth verifying). Either Tyler or Brode misread the NJ Archives source; the actual NJA citation should be checked.

Tombstone attestation: "their tombstones are in Basking Ridge Churchyard at Basking Ridge, New Jersey" — = primary-source statement that Daniel Sr + Grace Runyon's stones were both at Basking Ridge as of ~1898 when this app was filed. Catalog p.1 currently records "Basking Ridge Presbyterian churchyard" — = Tyler's 1898 statement consistent.

Sources cited (page 5)

"The following is a memorandum of the authority for the above statement. Genealogy of the Pioneers of the Passaic Valley. Jerseymen in the Revolutionary War. New Jersey Records, New Jersey Archives. Jerseymen in the Revolution p 360. Lt. Col. Cornelius Ludlow."

NOT cited: A.E. Cooper 1895 Family Tree, Littell 1851, Halsey 1895. Tyler's app pre-dates or doesn't use these. The "Genealogy of the Pioneers of the Passaic Valley" is likely Littell 1851 retitled / paraphrased OR a different work.

Wives data on Daniel Sr

NONE GIVEN. Tyler's app does NOT list Daniel Sr's wives beyond Grace Runyon. No Barbara Gibbs mention. Tyler had no information on or interest in Daniel Sr's later marriages.

What this source establishes

1. Tyler's app pre-dates A.E. Cooper 1898 NJHS article + Brode 1932 book

= 1890s-era pre-Hankinson-correction. Uses old Catherine-as-Cornelius's-wife identification. Provides foundation that Brode used for her own 1923 application's Daniel Sr services field.

2. Tyler is NOT a biological Cooper-line descendant

Her descent through Susan De Mun (John Ludlow's 2nd wife) means she carries NO Cooper genes. The Daniel Cooper Sr ancestry is genealogically structural via Cornelius Ludlow's first wife, but in genetic terms she's pure Ludlow-De Mun-Hand-McMillan-Merryweather-Tyler.

3. Tyler does NOT have Barbara Gibbs data

= Confirms our search-trace conclusion: M32455 is not a source for the b. 1738 d. 1789 datum. Brode could not have learned it from this paper despite citing it in her own application.

4. New Tyler-line catalog persons

NEW catalog people surfaced by Tyler's lineage: - Lotta Ludlow Tyler of Muncie, Indiana - James Bennet Ludlow × Harriet Merryweather (Tyler's parents) - Israel Ludlow × Eliza McMillan (Tyler's grandparents) — = if same Israel Ludlow as p.290 Israel Ludlow 1766-1804, Eliza McMillan = NEW wife identification (catalog currently has Charlotte Chambers per I.130 transcription). DISCREPANCY worth resolving: Brode 1932 says Israel m. Charlotte Chambers; Tyler says Eliza McMillan - William Ludlow × Charlotte Hand (Tyler's great-grandparents) - John Ludlow × Susan De Mun (Tyler's gg-grandparents) = same John Ludlow as p.53 + 2nd wife Susan Demun p.279

Follow-up

  1. Resolve Israel Ludlow wife discrepancy: Brode 1932 = Charlotte Chambers; Tyler 1890s = Eliza McMillan. Possible: 2 wives; or one's correct one's wrong
  2. Create stub p.N for Lotta Ludlow Tyler if she becomes a research subject (Cooper-collateral via Cornelius Ludlow)
  3. Verify Daniel Sr Judge nomination date "Mar 19 1759" vs Brode 1923 "Mar 28 1759" — = check NJ Archives Lewis Morris papers or similar primary source
