What this document records

The printed header verbatim

"Return of Births in the Township of Allamuchy County of Warren State of New Jersey, from the 1st day of September 1874 to the 1st day of September 1875." Printed page 557, under the standing instruction "THESE SHEETS MUST NOT BE MUTILATED OR DEFACED, BUT RETURNED TO THE SECRETARY'S OFFICE PERFECT, AS THEY ARE TO BE BOUND." Columns: No. - Date of Birth - Name of Child - Place of Birth - Sex of Child - Names of Parents - Occupation of Parents - Residence of Parents - Time of Making Record.

The waren cooper entry verbatim

Read on stitches under the printed heads: | column | as written | |---|---| | Date of birth | 11 Nove | | Name of child | Waren Cooper - ONE r, as written | | Place of birth | Quake Settlement | | Sex of child | Male | | Names of parents | Robert B & Rosetta C Cooper | | Occupation of parents | a ditto mark; NOT read at zoom | | Residence of parents | Quake Settlement | | Time of making record | June 25 1875 - read from the 1x view only, approximate | THE YEAR IS NOT WRITTEN ON HIS LINE. It is fixed by the return's own printed period - 1 September 1874 to 1 September 1875 - in which a November birth can only be November 1874. ⇒ 11 November 1874. (The same reasoning, on the same series, dated his grandfather's death at [F.278].)

The parents are named and that is the point

Robert B & Rosetta C Cooper - Roderick Byanton Cooper Roderick Byanton Cooper, entered as "Robert B." exactly as he is on [D.392] (1880) and [E.35] (1885), and Rosetta C. (Sickles) Cooper Rosetta C. (Sickles) Cooper. This is the FIRST RECORD-TIER SOURCE for Warren Edgar Cooper Warren Edgar Cooper's parentage. His file has carried the link on a Find a Grave memorial and [L.132], an Ancestry tree. A contemporary state birth registration naming both parents is a different class of evidence. And it names Rosetta in a state record, which matters on its own: her maiden surname rests on [L.132] plus one line of a daughter's memorial, and until now the only official record naming her at all was [C.62], her marriage return.

And it moves his birth year by one

Warren Edgar Cooper has carried 11 NOV 1873, cited to [B.112] - his own WWI draft registration, which he filled in about 1917-18, some forty-four years after the event. This return says 11 November 1874, and the day and month agree exactly. A THIRD SOURCE BREAKS THE TIE THE SAME WAY. [D.392], the 1880 federal census, gives his age as 5 on 12 June 1880 - a value re-read at 4x on 2026-10-24, which withdrew the long-standing "5 [or 8]". Five in June 1880 implies birth about 1874-75; six would be implied by a November 1873 birth. ⇒ A contemporary registration and a six-year-old census agree against a self-reported draft card, and the correction is adopted on Warren Edgar Cooper. The draft card's date is NOT deleted - it is recorded beside the return, because a man's own statement of his birthday is worth keeping even when it is a year out.

The rest of the page is not transcribed

About twenty births are on this page and only the Cooper row was stitched. One other row was read from the 1x orientation view and is recorded ONLY as a pointer, not as a transcription: a Berta Cooper, male, Quaker Settlement, parents Robert & Phebe Cooper - which would be Robert Marshall Cooper Robert Marshall Cooper and Phoebe A. (Schenck) Cooper Phoebe, a DIFFERENT Allamuchy Cooper family already well represented in this catalog ([E.27], [E.28]). It has not been cropped and must be re-read before it is cited. See t2.

Transcription and notes

One row of this page matters and it is in coverage::

11 Nove - Waren Cooper - Quake Settlement - Male - Robert B & Rosetta C Cooper

Two things follow.

First, [p.622] Warren Edgar Cooper's parents are now in a record. His file has carried the link on a Find a Grave memorial and an Ancestry tree; this is a contemporary state registration naming both of them. It is also only the second official record ever to name his mother [p.2130] Rosetta, after her own marriage return [C.62].

Second, his birth moves by a year - from the 11 Nov 1873 of his own WWI draft card ([B.112], filled in forty-four years later) to 11 Nov 1874. The day and month agree exactly; only the year differs, and [D.392]'s age 5 in June 1880 - re-read at 4x the same day - agrees with 1874. The draft card is kept beside the return rather than deleted.
