wwwdnet-dos.nj.gov/DOS_ArchivesDBPortal/DeathIndex.aspx, the Death Records, June 1878 - December 1900 database, which the site states is complete ("Data entry is complete", 628,584 records). Surname Cooper, first name left blank, years 1888 to 1889, county Warren - 5 records, all read off the grid's own cells. The same search was then re-run with county Sussex, because this file recorded the death as Sussex Co.: No Records Found. (link)Result:
Cooper, Biamgton | 48y | M | Warren County : Allamuchy | 1 Mar 1889 | 1888-89. 95 - C4. His death date to the day, in his own township, under a garbled given name. Argued in the death: note; the place has been corrected from Sussex (which was his burial county) and the field now cites this index. AND HIS BROTHER SAMUEL Samuel Cooper IS THE NEXT ROW BUT THREE - Cooper, Samuel | 55y | M | Allamuchy | 26 Dec 1888 | 1888-89. 95 - C3. The two brothers died ten weeks apart in the same township, which no source in this catalog had put together. THE LESSON, AND IT IS A GENERAL ONE: three earlier searches for this death - two FamilySearch, one Ancestry - were run on Roderick, and this man's name is never spelled that way in a record a clerk wrote. [D.4] has "R. Byngton", [D.392] and [E.35] have "Robert B.", and the NJSA index has "Biamgton". A surname-only search against a county and a two-year window returned five rows and would have found him at any time. Not a null for Sussex, either - the Sussex re-run returning nothing is evidence the death was not registered there, which is the thing that justifies correcting the field.findagrave 2026-10-03 · Given name R*, Cooper, b. 1838 +/- 3, d. 1889 +/- 1, New Jersey (6 matches).
