Cooper, Samuel | 55y | M | Warren County : Allamuchy | 26 Dec 1888 | **1888-89. 95 - C3**. Age, place and date all agree with the Ancestry index row already in death: - this adds the NJSA shelf citation, which is what turns John Cooper t-njsa from a $10 blind staff search into a direct $10 copy order. AND HIS BROTHER IS ON THE SAME PAGE OF RESULTS - see Roderick Byanton Cooper; Cooper, Biamgton | 48y | M | Allamuchy | 1 Mar 1889 | 1888-89. 95 - C4 is Roderick, whose death this catalog had recorded as having no index row at all. The other three are not ours as far as anything here shows: Cooper, Henry 73y, Greenwich, 4 Jan 1888 (1887-88. 95 - C114); Cooper, James W. 21y, Allamuchy, 4 Aug 1889 (1889-90. 95 - C30); Cooper, Mary E. 34y 4m, Belvidere, 6 Oct 1888 (1888-89. 95 - C7). James W. is worth a second look - 21 years old, dying at Allamuchy eight months after Roderick, in the township where this man and Roderick both lived. No file exists for him. The index gives no parents - name, age, sex, place, date and citation are the whole of it, so it locates the certificate without saying anything about the John Cooper link.ancestry all 2026-10-26 · HIS 1860 CENSUS, the last reported gap in his arc, and the death index entry his todo t1 had asked for since 3 October. Searched for: HIS 1860 CENSUS, the last reported gap in his arc, and the death index entry his todo t1 had asked for since 3 October. Three searches. (a) Collection 7667 (1860 US census): given name
Samuel, surname Cooper, born 1832 +/- 4, residence Warren Co., New Jersey - the place token warren-new+jersey-usa_3036, which is on the verified allow-list, and the returned URL did not rewrite the slug. 32 results, page 1 read. (b) The same collection, surname only, born 1832 +/- 6, male, Warren Co. - 3,708 results, Warren County hits ranked first, first page read. (c) All collections: Samuel Cooper, death 1888 exact, birth 1832 +/- 6, keyword Allamuchy - 46 results, page 1 read. (link)Result: CORRECTION, same day: the place filter was sent in the WRONG FORM, and that is documented. Search (b) used
residence_x=1-0-0, and the results came back spread across Massachusetts, Missouri and Nebraska, which was read at the time as "Ancestry treats the place as a ranking hint". It does not. [[feedback_ancestry_place_recipe_when_names_are_garbled]] records the exact token: residence_x=1-0-0_1-0 — with the _1-0 tail; plain 1-0-0 is accepted and does not bind. ⇒ These searches are RANKED, not scoped. Warren County still sorts to the top, so the reading below stands, but it stands on the ranking rather than on a filter, and a re-run should use the documented token. 1860: NOT FOUND, AND THE NULL IS WEAK ON THE CATALOG'S OWN EVIDENCE. No Samuel Cooper of that age is indexed in Warren County in 1860; the nearest New Jersey Samuels are at Stockton, Camden Co. and Chester, Morris Co. The Warren Coopers of his generation that the index does hold are Caleb (Frelinghuysen, abt 1834), Jeremah (Belvidere, abt 1835, b. PA), Geo (Independence, abt 1831), Levi (Independence, abt 1837 - our Levi H. Cooper, [D.470]), Robt (Independence, abt 1838) and Robert (Hardwick, abt 1838). Why that is a weak null rather than an absence: [D.470] already records that Ancestry's 1860 index OMITS John Seiner Cooper, 14, from this exact household - five of its six members are indexed and the sixth is not. An index that demonstrably drops a member of this family, in this county, in this census, cannot carry a name-null about another member of it. => read the pages. Todo t2. THE DEATH INDEX ENTRY WAS OPENED, which closes t1 - Ancestry collection 2540, record 520555326: age at death 55 years, Allamuchy, Marital Status SINGLE, parents' birthplaces "United States" with no names, FHL film 589314. His death moves from probable to certain; the parentage gains nothing. See the death: note. AND A TREE GIVES HIM A WIFE, WHICH THE INDEX CONTRADICTS. The "John Cooper Family Tree" has this Samuel with his parents right (John Cooper, Ann Antrim) and a spouse Elizabeth Gabbert. The index says Single, and the record evidence is a man returned disabled in 1870 and 1880 and living in his brother's house 1870-1885. Not adopted; marriages: stays absent, and the absence is now positively supported rather than merely unrecorded. Searched for: SIGNED IN. The New Jersey Herald run the 2026-10-03 row left unsearched, done properly this time with a date window round his death (26 Dec 1888) instead of a three-year sweep. Four searches, every hit opened: (a)
Cooper Allamuchy, 26 Dec 1888 - 1 Feb 1889, worldwide (no region filter) - 1 match; (b) "Samuel Cooper", 26 Dec 1888 - 1 Apr 1889, New Jersey (region=us-nj) - 3 matches; (c) Allamuchy, 27 Dec 1888 - 12 Jan 1889, New Jersey - 6 matches, run purely to test COVERAGE of the two issues after his death; (d) Cooper, 27 Dec 1888 - 1 Feb 1889, New Jersey Herald only (city=Newton&county=Sussex) - 5 matches, ALL FIVE OPENED AND IDENTIFIED. (link)Result: A CLEAN NULL, and this time a complete one: there is no death notice for him in the New Jersey Herald in the five weeks after he died. All five
Cooper occurrences in that run are accounted for and not one is a Cooper of this family: 2 Jan p. 3 - the word "cooper shops", the trade, inside Charles Leida's obituary; 9 Jan p. 3 - "Sylvester Cooper, a brakeman on the Sussex Railroad, had his wrist fractured at Drake's Pond milk station", and, in the SOUTH SUSSEX column, "Friend Amos Cooper has hired a hand for next summer"; 16 Jan p. 4 and 23 Jan p. 3, 30 Jan p. 2 - advertisement and column matter, no death notice. Search (a) found one page worldwide carrying both Cooper and Allamuchy in that window, and it is a false hit: the 16 Jan 1889 page 4 carries "CO-OPERATIVE HOUSE PAINTERS" and, separately, Merritt P. Strader's wagon-route advertisement listing Allamuchy among its stops. Search (b) returned 3 New Jersey matches, all Camden County (Courier-Post and Camden Daily Telegram, Feb 1889) - other men. AND THE NULL IS NOT A COVERAGE GAP, which search (c) was run to establish. The issues of 2 January and 9 January 1889 are both held, each with Allamuchy content on pages 1, 2 and 4, so the paper that should have carried a Allamuchy death notice was published, digitised and indexed. ⇒ Either none was printed, or the OCR missed it. One real limit remains, and it is a county boundary. The New Jersey Herald is a SUSSEX county paper; Samuel died at Allamuchy in WARREN. The Herald demonstrably carries Warren news, but a Warren County paper would be likelier to print a local death, and the Allamuchy searches above surfaced no Warren County title at all - Sussex 24, Camden 1, Cumberland 1, Somerset 1. Whether newspapers.com holds any Warren County paper for 1888-89 has NOT been established; see the todo.genealogybank 2026-10-03 · SIGNED IN (chris_2535).
