Collection 61260, "New Jersey, U.S., Death Index, 1848-1878, 1901-2017": (a) surnameMaines, no given name, died 1929-1941; (b) THEN A COVERAGE CONTROL, because (a) looked wrong: surnameSmith- the commonest surname in the state - with no given name and no place, died 1930-1932, then 1933-1937, then 1938-1948, then 1949-1951, then 1930-1952.Result: NOT A NULL - A NINETEEN-YEAR HOLE IN THE INDEX, AND IT SWALLOWS HER WHOLE. (a) 21 rows, every one dated 1929 and none of them her. (b) Smith returns ZERO for 1930-1932, ZERO for 1933-1937 and ZERO for 1938-1948, against 1,369 for 1949-1951 and a full set for 1929. Zero Smiths in a four-million-person state across nineteen years describes the COLLECTION, not the state. => Deaths of 1930-1948 are not in this index at all - and [D.882] plus the 1940 census put hers in 1930-1940. The one index that should have had her cannot reach the decade she died in. This search is therefore NOT evidence of absence and must not be re-run. Written up once, for the whole catalog, as guidance/reference_nj_death_index_1930_1948_gap.md. Note the collection's TITLE conceals this: "1848-1878, 1901-2017" reads as continuous. - Burial not yet found.

Searched for: NOT A NAME SEARCH - the two Andover Cemetery memorials of the household she was living in were PARSED withscripts/fetch_findagrave.ps1: 19511084 (Sarah Matilda (Cooper) Kinney Sarah Matilda (Cooper) Kinney, her daughter) and 19511070 (George R. Kinney George R. Kinney, her son-in-law, whose memorial this catalog had never parsed). Both are Andover Cemetery, plot Front Section. The question asked was whether a mother who died in her daughter's house is linked or buried with her.Result: SHE IS IN NEITHER FAMILY PANEL. Sarah Matilda's panel links her father Roderick Byanton Cooper Roderick Byanton Cooper, her husband, three siblings (Ida Elizabeth, Warren Edgar, Alfred) and one child; it does not link her mother. George's panel links his own parents (Horatio N. Kinney 1840-1909 and Elizabeth Ann Struble Kinney 1839-1889), two siblings and one child. No Rosetta, no Maines, no Mains, no Sickles anywhere in either. WHAT THAT IS AND IS NOT. It is NOT evidence she is not buried at Andover Cemetery - a panel records what a contributor linked, and Sarah's panel omits two of her own sons, so it is demonstrably incomplete. It IS a reason to search the cemetery itself rather than expect the family panel to deliver her. Searched for: THE LOCATED NAME SWEEP THE ROW ABOVE LEFT "STILL TO DO". Two searches onfindagrave.com/memorial/search, surname only, no given name and no year range, so that nothing could be suppressed by a wrong date: (a)lastname=Maines, location Sussex County, New Jersey, USA,locationId=county_1925; (b)lastname=Mains, same location and id. EVERY ROW OF EVERY PAGE WAS READ - 56 Maines over three pages, 35 Mains over two. THE LOCATION FILTER WAS CONTROL-CHECKED AND IT HOLDS: all 91 rows name a Sussex County cemetery, so this is a filtered result and not merely a ranked one. (That check is not ceremonial - Find a Grave silently ignored the location filter on this file's own 2026-10-03 searches, and three Ancestry location ids were guessed wrong on 2026-10-25.)Result: NULL FOR HER, AND A SECOND NULL NOBODY HAD ASKED FOR. (1) No Rosetta, Rosette or Rozetta Maines or Mains in Sussex County - and no R-forenamed Maines/Mains woman of anything like her age. The nearest in year are Catherine B. Maines (1827-1904), Nancy B. Lyon Mains (1818-1875) and Margaret J. Jones Maines (1864-1940), none of them her. (2) NEITHER IS NELSON MAINS, her second husband - d. 1900, married her at Andover in December 1897. He is absent from both spellings. That is worth having: the family she married into is well represented in the county (91 memorials, concentrated at Newton, Vaughan, Sparta, Baleville and Tranquility), so his absence is not a thin-coverage artefact. Whatever happened to her burial record happened to his as well. WHAT THIS IS. A bounded null on the surname she died under, in the county she died in. It is NOT evidence she is not buried in Sussex County - about a third of burials have no memorial at all, and her FIRST husband Roderick Byanton Cooper lies at Tranquility with no gravestone ([G.512]) - but it does close the cheapest route to her death date. WHAT IS LEFT: the Andover Cemetery interment list itself (where her daughter and son-in-law lie, Front Section); the Sussex County Surrogate, untouched by the 1930-1948 death-index gap; and the two newspaper engines, which remain unrun for her. She was NOT searched here underCooperorSickles- she had been a Mains for thirty-odd years by then, and a Cooper sweep of Sussex County is a different, much larger search.findagrave 2026-10-24 · SHE COULD BE BURIED UNDER COOPER, MAINS OR SICKLES, so the sweep was run on the GIVEN NAME with the location filter bound and...

Warren is the same shape: 1813, 1823, 1833, 1836, 1839, 1840, 1846, 1849, 1850, 1850, 1851, 1852, 1853, 1854, 1856, 1866, 1868, 1898, 1908 - the 1846 is Rosetta Mackey Boyd of Washington Cemetery, a Mackey who married a Boyd. No Rosetta Mains in Sussex at any date. SHE HAS NO MEMORIAL IN EITHER COUNTY. Note that her first husband is buried at Tranquility Cemetery with NO GRAVESTONE ([G.512]), so an unmarked grave in that plot is the obvious possibility and Find a Grave cannot see it.

MAINES: (a) 1930 federal census - Rosetta Maines, b. abt 1844 New Jersey, Byram, Sussex, New Jersey - opened, downloaded, filed, now [D.882]; (b) 1920 federal census - Rosetta Maines, b. New Jersey, Byram, Sussex - OPENED LATER THE SAME DAY, downloaded, read on census_stitch stitches and filed as [D.884]: she is Maines, Rosetta, Mother-in-law, F W 75 Wd, in George R. Kinney George Kinney's household at Byram, dwelling 44 / family 45. (This clause read "NOT OPENED" until the evening of 2026-10-25; corrected in place rather than left to go stale, which is the day's own lesson - see Ella (Sargent) Cooper.) (c) New Jersey State Census 1915 - Rosetta Maines, b. Sep 1845 New Jersey, Byram Township - ALSO OPENED THE SAME DAY and filed as [E.39]: Maines Rosetta, W f Sept 1845, 69, W, None - line 24 of family 58, again in the Kinney household. Its month-and-year gives 1845 against [D.654]'s Sept 1844, and the disagreement is argued in the birth: note above, where [D.884]'s age of 75 in January 1920 is the tiebreaker. (Also "NOT OPENED" until the same evening.) Her already-held 1900 row ([D.654]) is indexed Rosetta Maines [Rosetta Mainis] - the same spelling - which is the clue that was there all along. => SHE WAS ALIVE AT 86 ON 1 APRIL 1930. Rosetta Maines, birth year 1844, no place. (b) Surname Kinney, no given name, Lived In: Sussex County, New Jersey chosen from the
site's own autocomplete - 50 rows read, which covers Andover, Branchville, Byram,
Frankford and into Franklin.
(c) Surname Maines, no given name, same Sussex County filter - 50 rows read, covering
every Sussex Maines/Mains/Maine/Maynes household before the list leaves the county.
Why (b): [D.882] puts her in her daughter Sarah Matilda (Cooper) Kinney's household in 1930, so the daughter's 1940 household is the place she would still be. (link)Result: SHE IS NOT IN THE 1940 CENSUS OF SUSSEX COUNTY, AND NOT WITH HER DAUGHTER. (a) ZERO good matches. (b) The Sussex Kinneys of 1940 include, at Byram,
Harry Kinney (abt 1902) as head with wife Ruth, and Matilda Kinney, abt 1867, entered as Mother - which is Sarah Matilda (Cooper) Kinney SARAH MATILDA, widowed since 1939 and now living with her son, the Harry S. aged 24 on [D.882]. Rosetta is not in that household. (c) The Sussex Maines/Mains households are at Fredon (Charles J. b. abt 1869, Ella J., Carl M., Hazel, Edward), Lafayette (George B. b. abt 1865; and a separate Maine family), Newton (Charles W., Anna, Mattie E., and Margaret Jk Maines b. abt 1864) and Frankford (Herbert Mains and family). NO ROSETTA, and the oldest Maines woman in the county is born about 1864 - twenty years after her. => HER DEATH FALLS BETWEEN 1 APRIL 1930 AND 1 APRIL 1940, on the evidence of two enumerations ten years apart. That is a ten-year window where this file had an open-ended one, and it is a window the New Jersey Death Index covers. INDEX-TIER, ALL OF IT. No 1940 image was opened; these are Ancestry index rows and are recorded as leads. The Sarah Matilda (Cooper) Kinney identification in (b) rests on the given name, the age, the township and the son's name together, not on any one of them.familysearch tree 2026-10-24 · Given name Rosetta, born 1842-1847 in New Jersey, spouse surname Cooper. IT NAMES HER SECOND HUSBAND: Nelson Mains (1820-1900, KHL8-G52), married 12 December 1897 at Andover, Sussex - which agrees with [D.654]'s "married 3 years" in June 1900 and settles the Mannis/Mains, Orlson/Nelson uncertainty in that census reading from an independent direction. IT DOES NOT GIVE HER DEATH: "Deceased", ZERO sources. FamilySearch does not know either. TWELVE SOURCES ARE ATTACHED and four of them are records this catalog does not hold - see todos t1-t3. ONE ERROR SPOTTED: it makes Albert A. Cooper (1878) a CHILD of Nelson Mains and Rosetta; [D.654] calls him Nelson's "step son", and he is Albert Alvin Cooper, Roderick's son. A POSSIBLE DUPLICATE IS FLAGGED: Rosetta C. Sickels, M5JS-8WQ, not opened.
