About the NJSA Early Land Records database

See K.1 for full description.

CATALOG-DEFINING — 9+10 November 1733 Daniel Cooper + Reziah Runyon joint purchase of Lot No. 2

2026-06-23 — these 1733 deeds are now MANUSCRIPT-CONFIRMED (NJSA Order 202606-87390). C-3 f.77 read directly = "This Indenture made the Ninth day of November… Annoque Domini 1733 Between David Jamison… Gentleman of the one part and Daniel Cooper… Weaver and Reziah Runyon of Piscataway… yeoman of the other part"; the title chain (Evan Drummond + Rachel Harrison, widow of Benjamin Harrison s/o John Harrison) is confirmed on f.78/f.79. ** Companion correction: the related K.2 (F-2 f.33), previously catalogued as a separate "14 Dec 1720" deed, is in fact a 20 June 1735 deed (rec. 1742) in which Reziah resigns his moiety of Lot No. 2 to Daniel and recites this very 1733 joint purchase — i.e. there was never an independent 1720 transaction. So K.2 + K.31 are two acts of ONE Lot-No.-2 story: 1733 joint purchase (K.31) → 1735 Reziah-sells-his-half to Daniel (K.2) → Daniel sole owner.** The header below formerly read "reconfirmation of K.2 1720" — corrected.

The two 1733 records (C-3 EJ Folio 77 + 78)

Record A — 9 Nov 1733, C-3 (EJ) Folio 77 [verbatim search-result]

Record B — 10 Nov 1733, C-3 (EJ) Folio 78 [verbatim search-result]

Catalog significance

Reduces the catalog gap from 1720-1737 (per K.30) to 1720-1733 (~13 years).

  1. Daniel Sr same person as K.2 1720 — both records re-attest Lot No. 2 Passaic River, the same lot Daniel Cooper Weaver of Hunterdon acquired from Reziah Runyon 14 Dec 1720 per K.2. Same Daniel; same lot; same Runyon co-party.
  2. Trade upgrade Weaver → Yeoman — K.2 (1720) calls him "Daniel Cooper (Weaver) of Hunterdon"; K.31 Records A+B (1733) call him "Daniel Cooper (Yeoman)". = Daniel achieved landowning/farming rank between 1720 and 1733. Consistent with K.30 1737/1738 trespass cases where Daniel is plaintiff defending crops/fence/trees as a landed farmer at Hannover Twp Hunterdon Co.
  3. Title-chain primary-source-documented — Lot No. 2 originally belonged to the Johnston/Willocks/Harrison/Longfield EJ-Proprietor cluster, all 4 deceased by 1720. Title passed through Evan Drummond Gentleman of Perth Amboy + Rachel Harrison (widow of Benjamin Harrison, son and heir of John Harrison) → David Jamison Gentleman of NYC → Daniel Cooper + Reziah Runyon. The 1733 conveyance re-confirms / formalizes title at Daniel + Reziah's joint level.
  4. Why TWO records 9+10 Nov 1733? — Folio 77 is the brief conveyance; Folio 78 is the same conveyance with expanded title-chain narrative + named witnesses (William Jamison, Elizabeth Johnston). Likely the same legal action recorded back-to-back with separate indexer entries.
  5. NEW Cooper-Runyon partnership attestation 1733 — Daniel Cooper and Rezier Runyon are joint grantees in 1733, 6 years after Daniel × Grace Runyon's 17 Apr 1726 marriage. Strong primary-source corroboration of the Cooper-Runyon family-ties hypothesis (= Reziah may = Grace's father, or her brother / uncle; resolution pending).
  6. Elizabeth Johnston witness = possibly Dr John Johnston's daughter or widow (Dr John Johnston is the deceased former owner of the underlying lot tract). NEW catalog person potentially warranted.

Implication for pr.63 hypothesis ranking

SECOND MAJOR FINDING — 12 Jul 1766 Benjamin Cooper Horse Pound Brook acquisition

Record (S5 EJ Surveys Folio 304) [verbatim search-result]

Catalog significance

First primary-source-INDEX attestation of Benjamin Cooper's Lord-Stirling-mediated land acquisition at Horse Pound Brook 1766. Benjamin Cooper (= our p.2 Capt Benjamin Cooper) at age 25 receives 421.55 ac in 6 tracts at Horse Pound Brook + near Horse Pound Furnace, Morris Co., as joint grantee with James Anderson, mediated by Lord Stirling. Survey conducted by his brother Daniel Cooper Jr (= p.79) as Deputy Surveyor.

Cross-reference: this record appears in pr.62 NJSA Order 10-record Cooper land batch (= maintainer ordered S5.304 paid copy 2026-05-23, expected delivery ~2026-06-13). Manuscript pull is queued and will primary-source-LOCK this attestation at full body-deed tier.

THIRD MAJOR FINDING — 26 May 1751 Daniel Sr Morris-Co. adjoining-landowner

Record (Morris Co Deed Volume A Folio 311-313) [verbatim search-result]

Catalog significance

NEW catalog primary-source-INDEX attestation of Daniel Sr Morris-Co. adjoining-landowner 26 May 1751 = 1.5 years before K.10 Record 1 (Tristram Hull 16 Nov 1752 Long Hill Esquire attestation). The Paul Zauzenger 542-ac West-of-Passaic-River Morris tract presumably adjoins Daniel Sr's Long Hill landholding. Witnesses Cornelius Ludlow + John Stelle + Benjamin Moore + Peter Layton are NJ-network names; Silas Condict Judge of CCP signatory anchors the legal context.

Possible link: Same Paul Zauzinger / Zauzenger appears in K.10 and K.31 Tristram Hull 1752 deed (Folio 320-322 below) = Zauzenger → Hull transfer 16 Nov 1752 — = Zauzenger acquired the 542 ac in 1751 and sold it 18 months later to Tristram Hull. Daniel Sr remained adjoining-landowner throughout, primary-source-attesting his continuous Long Hill area landownership 1751-1752+.

FOURTH MAJOR FINDING — Ambiguous "Daniel Cooper (no Jr)" Deputy Surveyor records 1769 + 1774

Record 1 — 24 Feb 1769 S6 (EJ Surveys) Folio 52 [verbatim search-result]

Record 2 — 19 Sept 1774 S7 (EJ Surveys) Folio 169 [verbatim search-result]

Identification ambiguity

Both records name "Daniel Cooper" as Deputy Surveyor without 'Jr.' designation. Three possible readings:

  1. Daniel Sr at age 74 (1769) / 79 (1774) — unusual at that age, but Daniel Sr was Judge of CCP in 1773 per K.10 / K.16, so still active. NOT impossible.
  2. Daniel Jr without explicit 'Jr.' — the NJSA database is inconsistent in applying 'Jr.' tags; many other Daniel Jr Deputy Surveyor records DO use 'Jr.' but this could be database indexing error.
  3. A THIRD Daniel Cooper (Daniel Sr's son George Cooper? Daniel III?) — speculative.

Manuscript pull of S6 Folio 52 (View PDF available = free download) would resolve the ambiguity. Catalog priority.

INDEX SUMMARY — Remaining ~150 records by category

Given the volume (157 records / 16 pages), the full verbatim of all records would create an unmanageably large entry. Below is the index summary; full PDFs are local at (image held in the family archive).

Catalog synthesis

1. Gap-window narrowing chain

Catalog state Earliest gap-ending attestation Source
Pre-2026-05-28 6 Oct 1744 K.5 Green Brook Falls × James Alexander
Post-K.30 (2026-05-28) 20 Feb 1737/1738 K.30 6-case Hannover Twp Hunterdon trespass cluster
Post-K.31 (2026-05-29) 9 Nov 1733 K.31 Records A+B C-3 EJ Folio 77+78 Lot No. 2 reconfirmation

Net new gap = 1720-1733, ~13 years, at primary-source-NJSA-INDEX tier.

2. Cooper-Runyon partnership documented 1720-1733

Daniel Cooper + Reziah/Rezier Runyon are joint parties on Lot No. 2 Passaic River in both K.2 (1720) and K.31 Records A+B (1733). This 13-year continuous partnership is the strongest primary-source corroboration of the Cooper-Runyon family connection (= Reziah possibly Grace's father/uncle/brother; resolution still pending direct kinship attestation in deed manuscripts).

3. Cooper-Stirling family relationship primary-source-anchored 1762-1773

4. NEW NJ-network attestations from K.31
