William Cooper in the New Jersey, U.S., Marriage Records, 1670-1965

Detail Name: William Cooper Gender: Male Marriage Date: 13 Mar 1867 Marriage Place: Basking Ridge Bernards, Somerset, New Jersey, USA Spouse: Martha Crop Father: Peter Cooper Mother: Susan Cooper Film Number: 004208613

Data — verbatim from register-page image (entry #6 + entry #7 on adjacent line)

The register-page image shows two entries on consecutive lines (left-to-right column structure visible: marriage date / age / status / additional cols / name / residence / parents / occupation):

Entry #6 (groom row): Marriage date: March 13, '67 Age: 56 Status: Widower Name: William Cooper Residence: Long hill Parents: Peter & Susan Cooper Occupation: Farmer

Entry #6 (bride row, immediately below): Age: 43 Status: single Name: Martha Crop [register handwriting; almost certainly intended Cross — see "Discrepancy: 'Crop' vs 'Cross'" below] Residence: Basking Ridg[e] Parents: James & Gertrude Crop [Cross] Occupation: Milliner

(The Ancestry index transcribed the surname as "Crop" — mirroring the register's apparent handwriting. The register's cursive "p" terminal is plausibly a flourished "ss" digraph, but transcribed as "p" by the FamilySearch indexer.)

Discrepancy: "Crop" vs "Cross"

The Ancestry index card and the register image both render the surname as Crop. However, this is almost certainly Cross:

Reading: the surname on the register IS Cross; the register handwriting's terminal "p"/"ss" was mis-transcribed by the FamilySearch indexer as "Crop". Throughout the rest of this entry the surname is given as Cross (with the original "Crop" preserved in verbatim quotations only).

Significance — what this register PRIMARY-SOURCE-LOCKS

v191.17 hypothesis CLOSED at primary-source grade — William Cooper 1811-1880 IS Peter Cooper's son

G.102 v191.17 hypothesized William Cooper 1811-1880 buried Basking Ridge Presbyterian Plot 244 = Peter Cooper's eldest son (= G.91 Find A Grave family-block "William 1813-?" + G.90 1860 census transcription "Brother William"). The hypothesis rested on:

This 1867 marriage register PRIMARY-SOURCE-CONFIRMS the hypothesis:

Claim C.22 evidence
William 1811-1880 = Peter Cooper's son "son of Peter & Susan Cooper" recorded on register (= G.91 Peter Cooper 1761-1847 + Susan Boyle Cooper 1788-1865)
William's birth year "Age 56" on 13 Mar 1867 = b. ~1811 (= matches G.102 b. 1811 from Find A Grave; reconciles G.91's earlier "William 1813-?" reading as a 2-yr index/transcription drift)
William's residence "Long hill" = same Long Hill Morris Twp area as Peter Cooper's lifetime residence + 1850 Morris Twp dwelling 305
William's prior marital status "Widower" = consistent with both G.104 Sally Ann d. 1846 + G.105 Martha M Brown d. 1855 having predeceased him
William's occupation "Farmer" = exact match to D.233 1850 Morris Twp Schedule occupation

Catalog effect: G.91 Peter Cooper's Find A Grave family-block listed William 1813-? as Peter's son but with no Find A Grave linkage. C.22 PRIMARY-SOURCE-LOCKS Peter as the father of G.102 William 1811-1880, which closes the family-block linkage at primary-source grade.

NEW Y-LINE CARRIER LINEAGE PRIMARY-SOURCE-LOCKED at G.91→G.102

The chain Daniel Cooper Sr → Daniel Cooper Jr → Peter Cooper → William Cooper 1811-1880 is now primary-source-attested at every step:

Generation Person Source
0 Daniel Cooper Sr (1695-1795) G.27 stone + I.26
1 Daniel Cooper Jr (1729-1787) G.4 stone + G.91 Find A Grave + A.10 probate
2 Peter Cooper (1761-1847) G.91 Find A Grave + B.44 SAR
3 William Cooper (1811-1880) C.22 1867 register PRIMARY-SOURCE + G.102 Find A Grave + D.233 1850 census

This is now a fully-attested 4-generation Daniel-Sr-line chain via Peter (parallel to the Daniel-Jr→Dr-John-Sr→Dr-John-Jr→...→Chris Cooper chain documented in user_chris_cooper_ancestry.md).

Y-DNA implication: William Cooper 1811-1880 had three marriages spanning 1840s-1880 = a 30+ year reproductive window. If any son survived to adulthood and produced male-line descendants, those descendants would be NEW Y-DNA candidates for the Cooper-Coriell mystery (pr.16 Cooper-Coriell Y-DNA mystery.md) parallel to but independent of the Alexander → Abram + William Jr line.

Primary-source corroboration of G.106 Martha H Cross's parentage

The register names Martha's parents as James & Gertrude Cross — exactly matching G.106 stone-engraved + Find A Grave-documented parentage: - Father: James Cross 1775-1855 - Mother: Gertrude "Gittie" Wyckoff Stevenson Cross 1795-1885

The 1867 register is now a SECOND independent primary source (alongside the gravestone) for this parentage. G.106 was already at medium-high certainty for parentage; C.22 raises it to high certainty (two-source primary-source consilience).

NEW datum — Martha Cross's occupation = Milliner

Martha was a Milliner (hat-maker / hat-shop proprietor) at the time of her marriage. G.106 had no occupation field. Catalog implication: at age 43, Martha was running an independent trade in Basking Ridge before marrying William; consistent with the Find A Grave "single" status recorded on the register.

NEW datum — Martha's age "43 single" b. ~1824 within 1-yr of Find A Grave b. 7 Sep 1823

The register records Martha as age 43 on 13 Mar 1867 = b. ~1824 (or late 1823 if the marriage was before her birthday). G.106 Find A Grave records b. 7 Sep 1823 (= age 43 at marriage = consistent with stone-engraved birth date — within 1-yr/age-rounding tolerance).

Marriage chronology now fully primary-source-locked

Marriage William age Wife Wife's age Source
1st ~30s Sally Ann ~b.1823 d.1846 age 23 G.104 Find A Grave only
2nd between 1846-1855 (~age 35-44) Martha M Brown b. 23 Aug 1818 d. 15 Mar 1855 age 36 G.105 Find A Grave + stone
3rd 56 (Widower) Martha H Cross 43 (single) C.22 1867 register PRIMARY-SOURCE + G.106
