Searched for: HIS 1920 CENSUS - TULSA COUNTY, OKLAHOMA, THE COUNTY HIS WIFE WAS ACTUALLY IN, SEARCHED FOR THE FIRST TIME. 1920 US Federal Census (Ancestry coll. 6061), the place recipe in its CORRECTED form:
?name=_Cooper&count=50&residence=_tulsa-oklahoma-usa_2931&residence_x=1-0-0_1-0 - surname COOPER alone, no given name, no birth year, Tulsa Co. exact, 50 per page. 223 rows in 5 pages; ALL FIVE PAGES READ. THE RATIONALE: [D.814] places his wife Maud Maud Cooper and his youngest daughter Helen Helen Maurine (Cooper) Redding at 1227 E 5th St, Tulsa, on 10 January 1920 - and every one of the twelve previous searches for HIM was either scoped to Kansas or run nationally by name. Nobody had ever asked the obvious question: is he in the county his wife is in? If he is, this list contains him.Result: NULL, AND IT IS A COMPLETE-COUNTY NULL. Charles Franklin Cooper is not among the 223 Coopers enumerated in Tulsa Co., Oklahoma in 1920. Every Ohio-born Cooper in the whole county is accounted for and none is him: Cora M (wife of William H, b. abt 1876, Wekiwa), Charles A (b. abt 1884, Tulsa, wife Ora M), and Homer G (b. abt 1878, Tulsa) with his wife Florence F (b. abt 1884). TWO NEAR-MISSES RECORDED SO THEY ARE NOT RE-OPENED. (a) 'John W Cooper, abt 1861, IOWA, Father-in-law' in the Fairchilds household at Tulsa - the birth YEAR is exactly right and an elderly father-in-law lodging in a daughter's house is precisely this man's 1920 shape; but the given name is John W, not Charles or Frank, and the birth state is Iowa, not Ohio. (b) 'Charles Cooper, abt 1892 Kansas, head' with a wife MAUDE, abt 1892 Kansas, and daughters Pauline and Marguerite - a Charles-and-Maud Cooper pair from Kansas, which is exactly what a careless eye would seize on. Both are thirty years too young and neither daughter is his. WHAT THIS CLOSES: the single most plausible hypothesis left standing - that he had followed Maud to Tulsa and the index had mangled him there. It had never been tested, because [D.814] itself was only found earlier the same day. WHAT IT DOES NOT CLOSE: a surname so mangled that a surname-keyed list cannot reach it. A complete-county list is complete in the INDEX's spelling, not on the plate. ONE INDEX OBSERVATION WORTH NOT RE-NOTICING: the county holds a 'Calvin S Cooper, abt 1855, TENNESSEE, Uncle' at Tulsa. CALVIN is a name that runs hard in this catalog's Warren Co. line (Calvin Chandler Cooper Calvin C., [F.139] Calvin Chandler), so it catches the eye - but he is not in the [D.814] household (that household is closed at lines 93-96), and a Tennessee birth in 1855 fits neither Edgar Cooper's New Jersey family nor ours. Noted, not pursued. THE NEXT STEP IS UNCHANGED AND IS NOW THE ONLY ONE LEFT - an ED-by-ED image browse. The candidate EDs are Salt Creek Twp (Reno Co.) and Wilson Twp (Rice Co.) in Kansas, and, new today, ED 228, Precinct 12, Tulsa, where his wife and daughter actually were.

'Alma Cooper, 12, GRANDDAUGHTER, Nickerson, Reno, Kansas' - living with her widowed maternal grandmother Charlottie Ann (Carlile) Cooper Charlotte A. Cooper, 76, born England, in a two-person household on Cheney St. HE IS NOT THERE. AND THIS ONE IS A LESSON ABOUT THIS FILE'S OWN RECORDS, NOT ABOUT ANCESTRY. The complete Reno County 1920 Cooper list, run on 2026-10-16 and written up on this file, NAMES "Charlotte A" as one of the county's Cooper households and nobody opened it. His own daughter was in it, and so was his mother-in-law. A complete county list is only worth what you do with the rows: the 2026-10-16 pass read the list for HIS name and skipped every household that did not carry it. ⇒ With [D.813] (two sons lodging at Hutchinson), [D.814] (wife and youngest daughter at Tulsa) and now [D.815], THREE separate 1920 households hold his dependants and none of them holds him.

birth=1861_ohio-usa and NO RESIDENCE FILTER AT ALL - i.e. a NATIONAL search, bounded instead of being scoped to where the family lived. 156 rows; ALL FOUR PAGES READ (51-100, 101-150, 151-156). CORRECTED LATER THE SAME DAY (see Egbert Arthur Cooper): this row first described the search as "bounded by his birth STATE". It is not. birth=YYYY_place bounds the YEAR; the place half only RANKS, and the 156 rows include men born in Germany, Russia, England and thirty states. The conclusion below is unaffected and is in fact BROADER than it claims - the set is every Charles/Frank Cooper of those years ANYWHERE, not only the Ohio-born ones. Ancestry fuzzes the given name to the initial, so the set also contains every Frank C / C S / J C / Harry C Cooper of those years - which is a feature here, since he signed himself C. F. and is 'Frank' in half the record.Result: A NATIONAL NULL, AND IT IS A MUCH HARDER NULL THAN THE ELEVEN KANSAS-SCOPED SEARCHES IT REPLACES. Every Ohio-born Charles/Frank Cooper of about the right year in the whole 1920 census is a head of household with a named wife who is not Maud: Charles B (Los Angeles, w. Nancy A), Charles M (Loveland, Larimer, Colo., w. Nancy D), C S (Reed, Garfield, Okla., w. Annie R), Frank C (Cedar Rapids, Linn, Iowa, w. Elizabeth A), Frank C (Wichita Ward 1, w. Angie B - already excluded 2026-10-15), J C (Wichita Ward 6, w. Anna - likewise), Harry C (Chicago), Alfred C (Lisbon, Ransom, N.D., w. America). ONE CANDIDATE WAS OPENED AND EXCLUDED, recorded so it is not re-opened: 'Charles F Cooper, 58, b. abt 1862 OHIO, married, occupation None, Perkins, Erie Co., Ohio, ED 15 sheet 12A' (coll. 6061 rec. 79490272). THE AGE IS EXACTLY RIGHT - 58 on 1 Jan 1920 for a man born 20 May 1861 - he is Ohio-born, and he is 'married' while living apart from any wife, which is precisely this man's 1920 situation. IT IS NOT HIM: the household is Roy Chadwick 43, Josiah R Jones 86, Matthias Loughead 76, William A Miller 75, Watson C Rood 70, Elias Tenate 71, William J Affleck 83, Alexander M Fisher 71, John C Haefle 81, Andrew J Polson 81 - a dozen unrelated elderly men, i.e. a county infirmary - and Ancestry's own suggestion panel attaches the row to a Michigan death record, a Monroe Co., Michigan obituary index entry and an Ohio county marriage, i.e. to a DIFFERENT Charles Franklin Cooper who lived out his life in Ohio and Michigan. Ours died 16 Dec 1938 at Nickerson, Reno Co., Kansas [G.132]. ⇒ 1920 is no longer 'he is not in Kansas'. It is: HE IS NOT ANYWHERE IN THE UNITED STATES under a Charles/Frank Cooper name with an Ohio birth around 1861. The surname or the birth state is mis-indexed, or he was missed. The ED-by-ED image browse is now the main route, and [D.814] says where to point it - see the body.

Searched for: WHERE HIS WIFE AND YOUNGEST DAUGHTER WERE IN 1920, which nobody had asked. 1920 US Federal Census (coll. 6061), given name Elnora, surname Cooper, residence TULSA, OKLAHOMA (exact), no birth year - i.e. a search for his wife's unmarried sister Elnora Cooper, in the city [J.346] says his wife moved to in October 1917.
Result: FOUND, FIRST ROW -> [D.814]. His wife Maud Maud Cooper (49, 'sister', occupation none, marital condition Wd) and his daughter Helen Helen Maurine (Cooper) Redding (5, b. Kansas, FATHER BORN OHIO, MOTHER BORN IOWA) are at 1227 E 5th St, Tulsa, in Elnora's household. HE IS NOT WITH THEM. So the family was already split before the 1920 enumeration, which is why no 1920 search built around a household ever worked. See the body.
ancestry all 2026-10-16 · A CORRECTION TO THIS FILE'S OWN RECORD, NOT A NEW ANGLE. The 1920 Reno County place search (coll. 6061, surname Cooper, no given name,...
Searched for: A CORRECTION TO THIS FILE'S OWN RECORD, NOT A NEW ANGLE. The 1920 Reno County place search (coll. 6061, surname Cooper, no given name, no birth year, residence Reno, Kansas exact, 50 per page) is recorded TWICE above as having produced "the complete RENO COUNTY Cooper list". IT DID NOT. Both runs read PAGE 1 ONLY - fifty rows, ending in Salt Creek Twp. The list was re-run today and PAGE 2 READ.
Result: THE "COMPLETE COUNTY LIST" WAS HALF A LIST, AND THE MISSING HALF HELD TWO OF HIS SONS. Page 2 opens in Hutchinson - the county's largest town, which page 1 never reaches - and on sheet 5A of ED 175 it holds "Cooper, Elden" and ", Ivan", lodgers in Elsie A. Tiffany's house, both candy makers at the same candy company. Those are Elden Cooper and (possibly) Ivan L. Cooper -> [D.813]. SO HIS SONS ARE ACCOUNTED FOR IN 1920 AND HE STILL IS NOT. That is itself informative: the household had broken up - his eldest sons were lodging in town and working in a factory - so the 1920 search for a Cooper HOUSEHOLD containing Charles, Maud, Ivan, Alma and Maurine may have been looking for a household that no longer existed in that form. AND PAGE 3 WAS READ TOO, WHICH FINISHES IT: page 3 has left Reno County altogether (Leavenworth, Shawnee, Cowley, Johnson, Labette), and the only Reno rows on it are fuzzy SURNAME matches - Compos, Copas, Capper, Vankiper, Keefer - not Coopers. ⇒ THE RENO COUNTY COOPER LIST ENDS PARTWAY THROUGH PAGE 2, at about 96 rows, AND IT IS NOW GENUINELY COMPLETE. He and Maud are not in it. So the null for Reno County is now a real complete-list null rather than a claimed one, and it stands alongside the Rice County list (7 Coopers, all read). WHAT THIS CHANGES ABOUT THE NEXT STEP: an ED image browse of SALT CREEK and WILSON townships is no longer obviously the right place to start. His sons were lodging in HUTCHINSON and working in a factory there, so Hutchinson's EDs - or a Hutchinson city directory for 1919-21, which would list him if he were in town - deserve to come first. AND THE SEARCH LESSON:
&page=2 IN THE URL IS SILENTLY IGNORED by this form - it re-serves page 1 identically, so a hand-built URL looks like it paged and did not. The paginator control must be used. A "complete list" claim must say how many pages were read.ancestry all 2026-10-16 · THE CITY-DIRECTORY ROUTE INTO HIS 1920 GAP, tried immediately after his sons were found lodging at Hutchinson [D.813]. Searched for: THE CITY-DIRECTORY ROUTE INTO HIS 1920 GAP, tried immediately after his sons were found lodging at Hutchinson [D.813]. A directory lists everyone in a town by name and address, so it is the cheap version of an ED image browse. 'U.S., City Directories, 1822-1999' (Ancestry coll. 2469): (a) Charles Cooper, residence Hutchinson, Reno Co., Kansas, no year - 50 rows read; (b) surname Cooper alone, residence Hutchinson 1920.
Result: THERE IS NO 1920 HUTCHINSON DIRECTORY IN THE COLLECTION. The Hutchinson directories it holds are 1912, 1917 and 1924 - which bracket his gap without closing it. ⇒ The directory route cannot answer the 1920 question on Ancestry; it would need a Hutchinson Public Library or Kansas State Historical Society holding for 1919-21. ONE CANDIDATE OPENED AND SET ASIDE so it is not re-found as new: 'C FRANK COOPER', 1917, Hutchinson, 261 S Main (Rms), occupation BILLIARDS, place of employment 18 S Main (coll. 2469 rec. 880017866); the same man is indexed twice more as 'C F Cooper', 1917, Hutchinson. JUDGED NOT HIM. He is Charles Franklin 'Frank' Cooper, so the NAME is a strong match - but in 1915 our man is a married farmer in Salt Creek Twp with his wife and children [E.32], and this entry is a man ROOMING ALONE over a billiard parlour on Main Street. Ancestry also warns that this collection's fields were extracted by AI and may contain errors. Set aside, not excluded outright - if a record ever puts him in town between 1915 and 1925, this entry should be looked at again on the DIRECTORY PAGE IMAGE rather than through the index. AND A SECOND SILENT PLACE-FILTER FAILURE, worth recording beside the Find a Grave one on William G Cooper:
residence=1920_hutchinson-reno-kansas-usa RESOLVED TO RENO, NEVADA - the result set opens with eleven Reno, Nevada directory rows. The slug's county segment ('reno') won over its town and state. ⇒ Always check that the returned rows are in the state you asked for.ancestry all 2026-10-16 · HIS 1920 CENSUS, A FOURTH AND FIFTH ANGLE - THE CHILDREN, AND THE PARENT-NAME FIELDS. Nothing had ever searched for his DAUGHTERS, and nothing had used the 1920 index's own
Father's Name / Mother's Name fields - which is the one thing that can survive a mangled surname, because the parents' given names are indexed separately from it. All in the 1920 US Federal Census (Ancestry coll. 6061), 50 rows per page. (a) GIVEN NAME "Maurine" ONLY, NO SURNAME, birth 1914 +/-5, birthplace Kansas - for his daughter Helen Maurine Helen Maurine (Cooper) Redding, b. 24 Jan 1914 Reno Co.; 93,237 ranked, page 1 read, which is the whole Kansas-born 1914 cohort (the index ranks them first - 23 rows before the birthplace shifts out of Kansas). (b) GIVEN NAME "Alma" ONLY, NO SURNAME, birth 1907 +/-3, birthplace Kansas - for his daughter Alma May Alma May (Cooper) Colle, b. 22 Feb 1907; 89,217 ranked, page 1 read (48 of the 50 Kansas-born). (c) FATHER = Charles AND MOTHER = Maud, residence Kansas (exact), no surname, no given name, no birth year - so that ANY child of a Charles-and-Maud household anywhere in Kansas would surface whatever the surname was indexed as. Page 1 read.Result: NULL ON ALL THREE. (a) No Maurine b. 1914 in Kansas sits in a household with a father Charles and a mother Maud. (b) Same for Alma. (c) The Charles x Maud households on page 1 are Rogers (Cloud), Fritz, Spohn, Marsh, Leonard, Gustin, Payne, Ransom, Pemberton, Myers, Turnbull, Carson, Foster, Scoggin, Wilson, Cavin, Skinner, Usrey and Rogers (Cherokee) - no Cooper and no household with the right set of children. ONE CANDIDATE WAS OPENED AND EXCLUDED, recorded so it is not re-opened: "Alma Sutton, 13, b. abt 1907 Kansas, daughter, father CHARLES Sutton, mother MAUD Sutton, Kansas City Ward 3, Wyandotte Co., Wood Avenue, ED 165, sheet 17A" (coll. 6061 rec. 74020539). The parental pair is exactly right and the daughter's name and birth year are exactly right. IT IS NOT THEM: Charles Sutton is 46 (b. abt 1874; ours is b. 20 May 1861), Maud is 43 (ours b. 1870), the household holds only one other child - Marion, 18 - and there is NO IVAN and NO MAURINE. Ancestry also carries this family in 1910 and 1930 as Suttons. Worth noting for the trap it nearly was: the father's birthplace is indexed NEW JERSEY, which is this catalog's home state and would have read as corroboration to a careless eye. It is a coincidence; the age is wrong by thirteen years. ⇒ THE CONCLUSION IS UNCHANGED AND IS NOW BETTER SUPPORTED: five name angles, two parent-field angles and three complete county/township lists have all failed. NEXT is unchanged - an ED-by-ED image browse of Salt Creek Twp (Reno Co.) and Wilson Twp (Rice Co.), or a record that places the family somewhere in the decade. THE ONE ANGLE STILL UNTRIED IN AN INDEX: his son Elden Cooper Elden (b. 1896, aged 23 in Jan 1920) and his married daughters, searched as HEADS or WIVES of their own households rather than as his children.

Searched for: HIS 1920 CENSUS, A THIRD ANGLE, run late the same day: surname COPPER (not Cooper), no given name, no birth year, residence RENO, KANSAS (exact) - the WHOLE COUNTY, not just Salt Creek Twp. The surname spelling was the point: his son Elden's 1950 household is indexed under COPPER [D.807], so a mis-spelt surname is a documented habit of this family's records.
Result: THE SURNAME TEST COULD NOT BE MADE - ANCESTRY FOLDS 'Copper' INTO 'Cooper' and returned Coopers only. So this is not a Copper search; it is the complete RENO COUNTY Cooper list for 1920, which is still worth having and which EXTENDS THE 2026-10-16 SALT CREEK NULL TO THE WHOLE COUNTY. Page 1 of 50 covers Clay, Nickerson, Sumner, Plevna and Salt Creek townships: the Hiram/Laura, Robert/Katie, Charlotte A, David M/Nellie, E F/Louisa C, C A/Martha and Clyde/Viola households, plus Levett Charles Levitt Cooper with Lillian, Leona, Eldin, Garald and William, and Ward W Ward Walcott Cooper with Opal, Kenneth, Harland D and Eugene. NEITHER CHARLES FRANKLIN NOR MAUD IS IN IT. ONE TRAP WORTH RECORDING: there IS an 'Eldin Cooper, abt 1915' at Salt Creek - he is LEVETT'S son, not Elden Cooper Elden b. 1896. Two Eldins in one township. ⇒ Reno County now joins Rice County as exhausted by place. What is left is unchanged: an ED-by-ED image browse of Salt Creek and Wilson townships, or a record that places the family somewhere in the decade.

Searched for: HIS 1920 CENSUS, two angles neither of which had been tried - both chosen because every previous attempt was a NAME search and the family's 1940 row turned out to be indexed under garbled names [D.806] while his son's was under a different given name entirely [D.809]. (a) THE PLACE RECIPE ON RICE COUNTY: 1920 US Federal Census (coll. 6061), surname Cooper, NO given name, NO birth year, residence Rice, Kansas (exact) - he is at Wilson Twp, Rice Co. in 1930, so if he had already moved there by 1920 this is the complete list of Rice Co. Coopers. (b) HIS SON IVAN BY GIVEN NAME WITH NO SURNAME AT ALL: given name Ivan (exact both names), birth 1903 +/-3 in Kansas, any surname, any place - a direct test of the "mis-transcribed surname" hypothesis the 2026-10-15 row ends on. 666 rows; page 1 read, which covers every Kansas-born Ivan resident in Kansas (the index sorts them first).
Result: NULL on both. (a) RICE CO. HOLDS EXACTLY SEVEN COOPERS IN 1920 and none of them is this family: Fred (b. abt 1883 Kansas) with wife Lillian L and daughter Elma at Harrison Twp; and at Lyons, Charles A (b. abt 1864 WISCONSIN) with wife Lilly C and son Raymond A, plus an unattached Margaret (b. abt 1898). The Lyons "Charles A Cooper, abt 1864" is a near-miss worth not re-checking - our man is Charles FRANKLIN, b. 20 May 1861 in OHIO, and this one's wife is Lilly C, not Maud. (b) No Ivan of the right age sits in any Kansas household under any surname with a father Charles and a mother Maud; the Charles-fathered Ivans on page 1 are Kimball (Nemaha Co.) and Caulson (Topeka). ⇒ Combined with the complete Salt Creek Twp, Reno Co. list from 2026-10-16 (Levitt Charles Levitt Cooper, Ward Ward Walcott Cooper, an unrelated Leslie, and Ernest Ernest F Cooper), BOTH COUNTIES THIS FAMILY IS DOCUMENTED IN ARE NOW EXHAUSTED BY PLACE as well as by name. WHAT IS LEFT: he was enumerated somewhere outside Reno and Rice, or the surname is unrecoverable from the index. The remaining routes are a 1925 Kansas state census row (not yet found - see the next row) to narrow where he was in the decade, or an ED-by-ED image browse of Salt Creek and Wilson townships.

Result: NULL on page 1, and the page is dominated by 1885 and 1905 rows: NO 1925 CENSUS DATE APPEARS IN THE FIRST FIFTY RESULTS AT ALL, which suggests this Ancestry collection indexes 1925 thinly or not by birthplace. NOT A NULL AGAINST THE 1925 CENSUS ITSELF - the search did not reach it. NEXT: run it on FAMILYSEARCH's own 'Kansas State Census, 1925', which is where [E.33] came from, and search by place (Wilson Twp, Rice Co. and Salt Creek Twp, Reno Co.) rather than by name.

Searched for: THE FAMILYSEARCH FULL-TEXT SEARCH that the 2026-10-15 row below names as its own NEXT step ("an index null across two providers is not a null against the images"). Full-Text (unindexed images, handwriting search): "Charles F Cooper" as a phrase, place Kansas (61 results, page 1 read). Also tried "Charles F Cooper" Reno - DO NOT REPEAT THAT: adding a bare county word ORs rather than narrows, taking the set from 61 to 72,742 with an identical page 1.
Result: NULL for his 1920 whereabouts, and the reason is structural rather than a matter of searching harder: FAMILYSEARCH FULL-TEXT DOES NOT INDEX THE FEDERAL CENSUS. It covers land, probate, deed and court images, so it cannot reach a census row however it is queried - which means the "run a Full-Text search" step recorded below was never going to answer this question, and that is worth knowing before anyone spends another hour on it. The 61 Kansas hits are land and deed records; those read are other men - a homestead patent for "Charles F. Cooper of Mitchell Cownby Kansas" (Land Office at Concordia, 80 acres) and a 1901 Granbury, Hood Co., Texas deed acknowledged before a Lyon Co., Kansas notary by "Charles F. Cooper and Rachel Cooper, his wife" (neither Mitchell nor Lyon is his county, and Rachel is not one of his wives). NEXT, and now the ONLY route left: browse the Reno and Rice Co. EDs by hand on the 1920 images - he is in Salt Creek Twp, Reno Co. in 1915 and Wilson Twp, Rice Co. in 1930. A Full-Text pass on Reno/Rice COUNTY DEEDS for 1918-1922 would at least place him in a county, which is a different and still-open question.

Searched for: THE WICHITA ANGLE, WHICH THIS FILE'S OWN BODY HAS POINTED AT SINCE 2026-10-04 AND WHICH NOBODY HAD FOLLOWED. [J.399] - his sister Sarah's obituary, February 1920 - calls him "Frank Cooper, Wichita, Kansas", six weeks after the enumeration. The 2026-10-17 browse plan nevertheless ranked Hutchinson first (because his sons were there) and Wichita nowhere. Two searches, both place-filtered with the id read out of the form's Lived In box: Wichita, Sedgwick, Kansas = 72901. (a) U.S. City Directories (coll. 2469),
?name=Charles_Cooper&count=50&residence=_wichita-sedgwick-kansas-usa_72901&residence_x=1-0-0_1-0 - 194 rows (against 2,434,099 unfiltered), all four pages scanned for 1917-1921 entries. (b) 1920 census (coll. 6061), ?name=Frank_Cooper&...&residence=_wichita-sedgwick-kansas-usa_72901&residence_x=1-0-0_1-0 - 3 rows. Slug read back unchanged both times.Result: A SINGLE CANDIDATE, AND IT IS THE ONE THE FILE ALREADY EXCLUDED - BUT THE EXCLUSION HAD NO RECORDED REASON, AND NOW IT HAS ONE. The 2026-10-15 row dismissed "Frank C (Wichita, Sedgwick, b. 1862, wife Angie B)" with the words "neither is him" and nothing else; the only visible discriminator was the wife's name, which is precisely the assumption the 2026-10-17 work overturned ("every 1920 search that assumed a Cooper household with a wife and children was looking for something that did not exist"). The plate is now downloaded, filed and read: [D.835]. Frank C Cooper, 58, b. Ohio, Head, 204 South Water Street, Wichita Ward 1, ED 116, sheet 8B, dwelling 148 / family 235, renting, "dealer in automobiles" on own account; wife Angie B, 40, b. Missouri, waitress; stepdaughter Blanche L Gammell, 16, b. Iowa, waitress; and four lodgers. FOR: age 58 on 1 Jan 1920 is exact for a man born 20 May 1861; Ohio birth is exact; he is "Frank"; and he is in the very city [J.399] places him in six weeks later. THE DISCRIMINATOR IS UNAVAILABLE. Columns 21 and 23 read
U. S. A. on the plate, not an index collapse - so his father's NEW JERSEY birth, the fact that would settle it, is simply not recorded. This enumerator wrote U. S. A. across the sheet, though he wrote New Jersey for the lodger on line 80 when he had a state to write. AGAINST, and this is the actual reason the exclusion is probably right: the 1918 Wichita directory already lists Charles F Cooper, 118 S Water, "Propr Drive-in Garage and Taxi Service", firm Cooper & Byerly - the same street and the same trade as the 1920 row, so one settled Wichita motor-trade man from 1918 at the latest. Maud left for Tulsa in October 1917 [J.346]. A Reno Co. farmer could not plausibly have dissolved his farm, moved to Wichita, and established a named garage partnership within those months - and he is farming again in Wilson Twp, Rice Co., by 1930. Add an Iowa-born stepdaughter aged 16. VERDICT: the exclusion STANDS, now on stated grounds rather than assertion. Recorded at [D.835] with provisional: true so the candidate is visible and is not re-opened a third time. What would settle it either way: a Wichita directory for 1921-1924 showing Charles F Cooper still in the motor trade (ours was at Nickerson/Rice Co.), or Angie B Cooper's own record naming her husband's parents.ancestry all 2026-10-18 · COVERAGE CHECK on 'Kansas, U.S., City and County Census Records, 1919-1961' (Ancestry coll. 2270) - promoted the same morning to step 0...
Searched for: COVERAGE CHECK on 'Kansas, U.S., City and County Census Records, 1919-1961' (Ancestry coll. 2270) - promoted the same morning to step 0 of this file's what-is-left list, on the strength of its TITLE, as the cheapest way to 'place him in the decade at all'. Checked before spending any search effort on it: the collection's own Browse this collection panel, with Census Collection = City Census, reading the Year dropdown - which is the authoritative list of what the collection actually holds, not what its title implies.
Result: IT CANNOT ANSWER THE QUESTION, AND THE REASON IS COVERAGE, NOT ABSENCE. The City Census year list reads: 1919 — and then nothing until 1937, after which it runs 1937-1961 almost continuously. ⇒ A seventeen-year hole, 1920-1936, which is precisely and entirely the period Charles Franklin Cooper disappears in. The county schedules are worse for this purpose: they begin in 1953. So "1919-1961" is an ENVELOPE, not a run. Nothing on the search page says so; only the browse dropdown does. What it does still offer is 1919 - inside his gap, and after Maud left for Tulsa in October 1917. The 1919 city schedules are partial (the browse exposes no city or county list for that year, only "All"), and a surname-wide sweep of them is NOT yet done. Recorded as a COVERAGE finding so this collection is not re-promoted on its title a third time. It is struck from step 0; the ED-by-ED browse is the cheapest route again.

?name=_Cooper&count=50&residence=1925_rice-kansas-usa_2506&residence_x=1-0-0_1-0. Rice County, Kansas = 2506, read off the form. Rice is the county he reappears in, farming at Wilson Twp in 1930 [D.772].Result: A SECOND COMPLETE-COUNTY NULL, and this one is tiny enough to quote entire — FOUR ROWS:
C A Cooper | spouse Lilly C | b. **Wisconsin** abt 1863; Lilly C Cooper | b. Iowa abt 1867; Selman Murry | in the C A Cooper household | b. Kansas abt 1906; Fred W Cooper | b. Kansas abt 1883. Two near-misses, both excluded in writing. (a) C A Cooper is the only male of roughly the right age — but born Wisconsin, not Ohio, and the initials are C A, not C F. (b) Fred W Cooper catches the eye because Charles Franklin Cooper has a son Fred — but that Fred was born abt 1900 ([E.32], 1915), and seventeen years is far too wide for an age slip. A different man. So he is in NEITHER of his two counties in 1925. Combined with the Reno 1925 complete-county null, the Reno 1920 complete-county list, the 1919 Hutchinson sweep and the national 1920 index null, that is five bounded negatives across the decade. What it still does NOT prove. All five are name-indexed searches, and this file's standing hypothesis is a mangled surname — which would evade a Cooper-keyed list exactly as it evaded the federal index. ⇒ The pattern now favours "he was somewhere else entirely in the 1920s" over "mis-indexed at home in Reno or Rice", but only an image search can distinguish them. The ED-by-ED browse remains the route; what has changed is that Kansas is now an expensive place to point it.ancestry all 2026-10-18 · The one year inside his gap that coll. 2270 does hold — 1919 — swept for Coopers at Hutchinson:...

Joe Cooper, D L Cooper, C A Cooper, all enumerated 1 Mar 1919. None is him. (C A recurs at Hutchinson in 1937 and 1943, so he is a settled and different local man.)
