(b) the NAMELESS search - ?birth=1872_new+jersey-usa&birth_x=1-0-0&residence=... - 1,359 rows; Northampton is too large for the band to be readable, so it was abandoned in favour of (c) rather than half-read. (c) GIVEN NAME ONLY, no surname - ?name=Mary_&birth=1872&birth_x=1-0-0&residence=... - 143 rows, PAGES 1 AND 2 READ, which is where the Mary given-name band ends (page 3 is 'M' middle initials). So she is not indexed under her married name anywhere in the county. (c) Of 143 Marys born about 1871-1873 in the county, exactly TWO are New-Jersey-born: 'Mary Kitetten', 78, widowed, HOUSEKEEPER at Pen Argyl, and 'Mary R Vincint', 79, 'Sister' at Hanover. THE PEN ARGYL ROW LOOKED RIGHT AND IS NOT HER. Widowed, born New Jersey, aged 78 against her 77, keeping house for an 84-year-old widower - and Pen Argyl adjoins East Bangor, where she is buried. 'Kitetten' is not a surname, so it read as a garbled index entry of the kind that has hidden three people in this sweep already. The plate was downloaded, filed and the name cell read at 5x: it says 'KiTcHteN' - KITCHEN - in the enumerator's block capitals. A real surname, a different woman. Ancestry's 'Kitetten' is a faithful-enough reading of that hand, not a mangling of Sellinger. The plate is kept at (archive file) so the test is not repeated. WHAT IS LEFT: she may have left Northampton County after 1935, or remarried and be under a third surname. Her 1961 death is also unrecorded - Find a Grave gives only the year [G.635], and the 'Frances C Sellinger' row in the New Jersey death index (named on this file, never opened) is the obvious next step and would give a county.
