Searched for: HIS MARRIAGE TO Lulu (Beers) Cooper LULU BEERS, ASKED IN THE OTHER STATE. Every search before this one - including 2026-10-17's complete double-sided read of NJ coll. 61376 - assumed NEW JERSEY. THE RATIONALE: they lived at Oxford Twp on the Delaware, directly across from Northampton Co., PENNSYLVANIA, and by 1910 they had moved there ([D.724], [D.725]); Pennsylvania counties have kept marriage-licence dockets since 1885, and the marriage is about 1892 from [D.665]'s "years married = 8". A cross-river marriage is the ordinary thing in that corner of the state. (a) All collections:
?name=Lul*_Beers&marriage=1892_pennsylvania-usa&marriage_x=1-0-0&count=50 - 35 rows, all read. (b) Then the collection that surfaced, "Pennsylvania, U.S., County Marriage Records, 1845-1963" (Ancestry coll. 61324), from BOTH SIDES and read complete: ?name=Lul*_Beers&count=50 - 7 rows; ?name=Samuel_Cooper&name_x=1_1&count=50 (exact both halves) - 9 rows.Result: NULL - BUT IT IS A COVERAGE NULL AGAIN, AND THE COUNTY DISTRIBUTION IS WHAT SHOWS IT. (a) returned no Beers at all; the wildcard fuzzed the surname to Bair / Baird / Beard / Bowers / Byers, which is itself worth knowing - "Beers" fuzzes badly, so a wildcard given name plus a fuzzy surname is a poor search for this family. (b) IS THE INFORMATIVE ONE. Of the 7 Lul and 9 Samuel rows, every dated row but two is ALLEGHENY COUNTY - Pittsburgh, the far end of the state - the exceptions being one Clarion Co. and one "Hamsburg". ⇒ Coll. 61324 is effectively an ALLEGHENY COUNTY collection despite its statewide title. A Northampton Co. marriage of 1892 could not appear in it whether or not it exists. ⇒ THE PENNSYLVANIA ROUTE IS NOT CLOSED - IT IS UNTESTED. No online collection in hand covers Northampton Co. marriages for 1892. That is a different and more useful statement than the New Jersey null of 2026-10-17, which WAS a true complete-index null on a collection that demonstrably reaches this family ([C.84] was its control). NEXT: Northampton Co. marriage-licence dockets from 1885 - the Register of Wills / Clerk of Orphans' Court at EASTON, and whatever FamilySearch has filmed for the county (give the reel a
films/film.<DGS>.yaml when it is used). Then the Warren Co. Clerk at Belvidere, which the earlier row already names. A TREE-TIER LEAD PICKED UP IN PASSING, recorded as a lead only: an Ancestry tree gives Lulu (Beers) Cooper's mother as "Elizabeth Ann Pittenger" and her father as Peter Beers. The catalog has only "Elizabeth" from the NJ births index. Pittenger* is a surname the catalog does not hold for her; it is NOT asserted and belongs to Lulu (Beers) Cooper.ancestry all 2026-10-17 · HIS MARRIAGE TO Lulu (Beers) Cooper LULU BEERS - the gap report's only unsearched gap on this file, and it had never been searched at...
Searched for: HIS MARRIAGE TO Lulu (Beers) Cooper LULU BEERS - the gap report's only unsearched gap on this file, and it had never been searched at all. FIRST, THE BOUND THE CATALOG ALREADY OWNED: [D.665], the 1 June 1900 Oxford Twp household, gives BOTH of them "years married = 8", which puts the marriage at about 1892, and their eldest child Ruth was born Mar 1893. Nobody had written that down as a marriage bound. ⇒ Then "New Jersey, U.S., Marriage Records, 1670-1965" (Ancestry coll. 61376 - the New Jersey State Archives county marriage returns), searched from BOTH SIDES AND READ COMPLETE, 50 per page, no year filter, because Ancestry fuzzes a given name to its initial and a year bound would have thrown away the variants: (a)
?name=Lulu_Beers&count=50 - 61 rows, BOTH PAGES READ; (b) ?name=Samuel_Cooper&count=50 - 198 rows, ALL FOUR PAGES READ.Result: A COMPLETE-INDEX NULL FROM BOTH SIDES. There is no marriage of a Samuel Cooper to a Lulu Beers anywhere in Ancestry's New Jersey marriage returns, 1670-1965. THE SEARCH IS TRUSTWORTHY BECAUSE THE INDEX PASSED A CONTROL: the 198-row groom list contains "Samuel Cooper, 15 Sep 1821, Sussex, Sarah Balden" - which is Samuel Cooper's marriage, already held as [C.84]. The collection does reach this family's own Warren/Sussex returns when they exist; it simply does not hold this one. WHAT THE NULL DOES AND DOES NOT MEAN. The collection is county returns, and New Jersey's coverage for the 1880s and 1890s is patchy by county. ⇒ It means the Warren Co. return was never filmed, never indexed, or was never made - not that they did not marry in New Jersey. WHAT IS LEFT: the Warren Co. Clerk's own marriage books at the county seat (Belvidere); the New Jersey State Archives' own index, which is not the same index as Ancestry's; or a church register - he was buried from the Portland Presbyterian church and his wife's family was at Oxford.

Searched for: THE SAME MARRIAGE, FROM THE CHILDREN. After the NJ marriage index came back empty from both sides, the question was turned round: a couple leaves a trail of BIRTH returns even when their own marriage return is missing. FamilySearch historical records,
q.surname=Cooper + q.motherGivenName=Lul* + q.motherSurname=Beers, no place and no year - a wildcard on the given name because this woman is "Lulu", "Lula" and "Lulu A" across her own records. 43 rows, ALL READ (one page).Result: NO MARRIAGE RECORD - BUT FIVE RECORDS OF THIS FAMILY THE CATALOG DID NOT HOLD, three of them primary returns that place Samuel and Lulu together as husband and wife in Warren Co. before 1900, which is corroboration of the marriage even though it is not its date. 1 NJ STATE RETURN OF BIRTHS, v 51 p 344 (ark 1:1:FZ9Z-RXR): an UNNAMED FEMALE Cooper born 30 Sep 1895, "O., Warren, New Jersey"; father "Sam'l. Cooper" 28, mother "Lulu Beers" 25. ⇒ This is Margery (Cooper) Snyder Margery, whose month and year are on [D.665]; her file now carries the exact day, graded probable. The father's age 28 is two years high for a man born 20 Mar 1869. 2 and 3 NJ STATE RETURN OF BIRTHS, p 351 - TWO index entries, ark 1:1:Q2SZ-L839 and ark 1:1:Q2SZ-LC82, both MALE, both Warren County, both noted "Year is 1898 or 1899", both with the same parents. THEY ARE ONE RETURN INDEXED TWICE, not two children: one entry carries the child's name as "Samuel Cooper" and the other as "Not Shown Cooper", which is what happens when the return leaves the child unnamed and an indexer falls back on the father's name. ⇒ It is Lewis Cooper Lewis, born Mar 1899 per [D.665]. NOT ASSERTED AS A FIFTH CHILD, and here is the arithmetic that forbids it: [D.665] gives Lulu "4 children born, 4 living" on 1 June 1900, and names exactly four - Ruth 1893, Margery 1895, Elsie 1897, Lewis 1899. There is no room for a son Samuel. 4 NUMIDENT (Social Security application extract): "Ruth Cooper, b. 24 March 1893, Oxford Warre, New Jersey, d. 7 Sep 1989, parents Lulu A Beers and Samuel J Cooper" - the exact day for Ruth C. (Cooper) Williams, whose file had only "MAR 1893". 5 GenealogyBank Obituaries index*: "Lewis Cooper, obituary 21 April 1985 Allentown; b. 1899 Oxford NJ; d. 21 Apr 1985 Forks; parents Samuel J Cooper and Lulu Beers Cooper; spouse Nellie Cruver Cooper; children Lois A, Shirley J, Carl L, Leroy S, Joan; sibling Mrs Ruth Williams." NOTHING NEW - this is the index behind [J.396], which the catalog downloaded on 2026-10-04, and Lewis Cooper already carries the wife and all five children. Recorded as a CONFIRMATION, which is worth as much as a find when it means a lead need not be chased twice. NO IMAGE FOR ANY OF THE THREE BIRTH RETURNS, AND THE REASON IS STRUCTURAL, NOT A LAPSE. See the row below.

Searched for: METHOD, NOT A PERSON - WHY THE 1895 AND 1899 NEW JERSEY BIRTH RETURNS CANNOT BE DOWNLOADED, checked so that this is not re-attempted for every Warren Co. child born in these years. (a) FamilySearch's own "Check Image Availability" on ark 1:1:Q2SZ-LC82 returns "Image Available - to view these images, access the site at a FamilySearch center or affiliate library, or visit one of our partner's sites or the legal record custodian (fees may apply)" - i.e. the film is restricted and cannot be viewed from home. (b) Ancestry's card catalog was then searched for the partner copy, keyword "New Jersey births", 51 collections, page 1 of 3 read.
Result: ANCESTRY HAS NO NEW JERSEY BIRTH IMAGES FOR 1879-1900, AND THE GAP IS VISIBLE IN THE COLLECTION TITLES THEMSELVES. The two state-wide sets are "New Jersey, U.S., Birth, Marriage and Death Records, 1711-1878" (4,025,743 records - this is coll. 62483, the one that supplied [F.356], Lulu's own 1869 birth return) and "New Jersey, U.S., Birth Index, 1848-1878, 1901-1929" (2,904,115). Read those two date ranges together: 1879 to 1900 is in neither. The only other candidate, "New Jersey, U.S., Births and Christenings Index, 1660-1931", is an INDEX extraction with no images - it is the same body of data as the FamilySearch index above. ⇒ THE CONSEQUENCE FOR THIS CATALOG: every New Jersey birth between 1879 and 1900 is reachable at INDEX TIER ONLY from home, whichever of the two services is used, and RULE ZERO-C cannot be satisfied for it by downloading - there is nothing to download. That is a property of the holdings, not a shortcut, and it should be written into the search row of every such birth. THE ROUTE THAT REMAINS is a FamilySearch center or affiliate library, or the New Jersey State Archives direct. One visit would settle the plates for Margery (v 51 p 344), Lewis (p 351) and whatever Elsie's and Ruth's returns say - four returns on what may be one or two films.

Result: FOUND, AND THE SURNAME IS WHY IT HAD NOT BEEN. The household is entered 'COPPER, Samuel J.', 81, head, with 'Low A.' (= Lulu) 80 and 'Snider, Margaret' 54, widowed - his daughter Margery (Cooper) Snyder Margery (Cooper) Snyder, widowed 1940 and living with her parents. -> [D.822], image downloaded and filed. At 4x the plate itself reads COPPER: the ENUMERATOR wrote it, so this is not a mis-index to be corrected. The place recipe reached it only because Ancestry folds Copper into Cooper - a name search on this family had no reason to try the other spelling. Worth setting beside [D.807], where Elden Cooper Elden's 1950 household is also entered COPPER. Two different branches, two different states, the same corruption in the same census.

Result: The tree gives FIVE children with Lulu Beer: Ruth 1893-1989, Margery 1895-1984, Elsie 1897-1951, Lewis 1899-1985 - all on file - and 'Samuel Cooper', about 1900 (GPHG-DV7), sourced only to a 'New Jersey, Births and Christenings' row. NOT ACCEPTED: in 1910 Lulu reports 4 children born, 4 living, with exactly those four in the household [D.666]; no birth record for a Samuel with these parents was found (FamilySearch: Samuel Cooper, b. 1899-1901, father Samuel, mother Lulu; surname Cooper, b. 1898-1902 in Warren, father Samuel). Probably another family's child attached to the profile.
